When Love Turns Cold

CHAPTER 60

Hansel wasn’t one to back down either. He raised his fist and swung back at Paul.

“How dare you hit me? Who do you think you are?” he snarled as he attacked Paul. “When I was being intimate with Miranda back then, your were just a nobody!”

Paul intercepted his punch easily. Unlike Hansel’s furious and hysterical behavior, he remained calm and composed. However, the look in his eyes was cold and steely.

He retorted, “And how about you? Who are you to her? A clingy ex- boyfriend who can’t let go, or a rapist?” His words cut deep and struck at Hansel’s sore spots.

“You’re courting death!” Hansel exerted all his strength to free his fist from Paul. Nonetheless, Paul’s grip remained firm and didn’t budge an inch.

“That’s enough!” Miranda had completely recovered by now. She got up from the couch, her trembling hands clutching Paul’s jacket. She didn’t spare Hansel a glance and turned to Paul.

With her head lowered, she said, “Dr. Jefferson, I’m sorry you had to see such a terrible scene.”

Paul frowned. “Do you need to call the police?”

Miranda remained silent for a moment and replied, “Forget it. Let’s just go.”

“Alright.” Paul respected her decision. He didn’t want to meddle in someone else’s relationship issues.

She continued, “These are my books. … don’t have the strength to carry them now. Can you help me carry them? Thank you.”

Paul bent down and lifted the sack of books with one hand. Then, he supported Miranda as they left together.

Hansel stood rooted to the spot, staring after their retreating figures. In a fit of rage, he kicked over a decorative plant at his feet.

In the car, Miranda watched as the mansion grew smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror. Six years was neither a short nor a long time.

When she’d first moved in, she’d been filled with hope for the future. She’d imagined them decorating the mansion and managing the garden together…

She had never imagined that she would leave the mansion in this manner. In the end, she’d no longer have anything to do with the mansion. She’d also have no further connection to the man living in there.

Miranda rolled down the window, letting the wind mess up her hair. Exhausted, she leaned back against the seat and closed her eyes in

silence.

Paul remained silent as well. He occasionally glanced at her through. the rearview mirror to check on her. When he noticed that she’d fallen

asleep, he parked the car on the curb near Bedford College.

He didn’t say a word. Instead, Paul just casually watched the scenery outside.

Miranda slept fitfully, but she was too tired to care. The opportunity to close her eyes and rest for a while was a relief.

Amidst the silence, she could sense how considerate Paul was toward her. She opened her eyes and gave him a complicated look. “Thank you! for what you did earlier. You helped me once again.”

Paul replied, “It was nothing.”
