Get a second chance
Two days earlier.
In Mr Edward’s office, Mark almost went mad calling everyone on his contact list. As he looked for ways to get Melissa back, David and Mr Edward organized a search team with the police and his security team when Luke Edward barged in.
“You have to get out.”
“Luke!” Mr Edward roared as the door bust open.
“There is a bomb in the office dad. We have to leave now.” The three men stared at him as he checked the bookshelf and the cabinets.
Trying to get information on the new gang in town, Luke sent one of his trusted men to investigate.
The man was later captured and tortured. While locked up, he overheard the plan to bomb Edward’s mansion and as they took him out to finish him off, he escaped.
Then went straight to Luke’s office. When Luke got the information, he instructed his men to take him to their private doctor as he ran to the mansion. Though he never saw eye to eye with his father on most things, he still loved him and was willing to risk his life for him.
At the mansion, he asked Lucy to get everyone out, then proceeded to the office to get his father out.
“What!” They said in unison, staring at him with raised eyebrows.
“Uncle, are you high?”
Luke never cared for anyone so David didn’t take his words seriously.
“This is no time for games.” Luke glanced at David.
“I found it. Oh my!” Mark took a step back staring at the small phone attached to the safe.
“Oh! We have to leave. Grandfather!”
“It’s remote controlled, we have no time.” They all froze staring at the two seconds displayed on the gadget.
“We can remove it,” Mark suggested.
“No, it will be too late. Come, we have to move fast.”All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
In seconds the place was blown into pieces as Diana got to the remote.
“Grandfather, cough, cough, grandfather?” In a dark heap of dust, David crawled calling for Mr Edward.
“I’m fine, I’m fine.” He coughed trying to get up. “Mark, Luke?” He called out.
The massive explosion took out everything in the office. Luckily Mr Edward acted fast. He opened a secret exit behind the bookshelves and urged them to leave. But before the door locked, the explosion caught them and knocked them down.
“Luke!” With David’s support, Mr Edward walked towards Mark.
“He’s unconscious.” Mark knelt beside Luke.
He was last to exit the office. The blast impact threw him against the wall leaving him unconscious.
“We can’t stay here, he have to move.”
The smoke was sipping in making it hard for them to breathe and see clearly.
Walking deep into the tunnel, the motion sensor light turned on lighting what seemed to be a garage with several vehicles parked there.
They carried unconscious Luke Edward into the car and drove to a safe house deep in the forest. Away from the mansion they called the family doctor and airlifted Luke for an emergency head surgery.
…
“Doctor, is my son going to be okay?” Mr Edward asked seated beside his son’s hospital bed.
“The surgery went well. We managed to stop the brain bleed but we have to closely monitor him for any changes. More good news is that the brain swell has reduced and no major damage was done. Once he is awake we will run more tests, but for now, let’s keep him under observation.” The doctor explained before leaving the room.
“I can’t lose you, my son.” With tears in his eyes, Mr Edward stared at Luke’s face. “First it was your mother. My beloved Isabella then your brother, and now my missing granddaughter. “He sniffed back the tears holding Luke’s hand. “How long will these tragedies keep happening to my family?” Mr Edward sobbed, unable to control the tears.
“Please spare them. I’m the one who hurt people for money.” With his eyes closed more tears rolled down his cheeks. “Trying to get above everyone I single handily ruined this family. I’m the one who should feel all the pain, not my children. Please help me bring my little Isabella home and give Luke another chance, please.” Though Mr Edward was not much of a believer, he knelt beside his son’s bed, tears soaking the bed sheets as he prayed for another chance.
….
“How long are we going to hide out here? It’s been two days now, I have to find Melissa.” David paced around the room in the safe house they had gone to.
“We have to stay here for now, until we find out who we are up against.” Mark said trying to cool him off though deep down he felt the same anxiety.
“Stay here? My sister is missing. My uncle is fighting for his life. I can’t stay here doing nothing. I have to find her soon.” David sat down covering his face with his hands breathing in and out trying to calm down. “This is all your fault, Johnson, she became friends with Sasha to please you.” Getting up, he confronted Mark. “If anything happens to Melissa I will never forgive you.”
“I will never forgive myself for not being there to protect her.” Mark sighed running a hand through his hair. “But Sasha had nothing to do with this. Her phone was stolen at the airport as she said. The police report confirms it.” Mark tried to explain.
“And you believed those cheap lie’s? That woman tricked you into signing your divorce papers, what can’t she do? I never thought you were this dumb.”
“I understand your anger, David. You’re trying to pin this on me because you feel guilty for letting her go alone. I’ll let this slide for now since my wife’s safety is more important than wasting time fighting someone like you.” Mark stepped back checking his phone.
“You blame me for Melissa’s abduction, don’t you Johnson?” David asked charging forward. “Why don’t you say it to my face?” He shoved Mark but Mark stood his ground.
“Yes, I blame you for not sending enough security along for her protection and I blame myself for trusting you could keep my wife safe which you people couldn’t. Rather than picking fights with me, do a better job and find her.” Mark roared staring at David eyeball to eyeball with clenched fist.
“Stop!” Just then Mr Edward walked in stopping David from punching Mark.
“That’s enough, Melissa is in danger and someone tried to kill us. We have to plan carefully for our next move. Fighting and blaming each other won’t help.” Mr Edward spoke as he turned on the screen playing the surveillance video taken from the hotel.
“I’m sorry, I just feel like my mind will explode.” David apologized.
“Judging from the shock on Melissa’s face and her hesitation to shoot, I think the person who took her is someone she is familiar with.” Mark explained looking at Melissa’s body language ignoring David’s apology.
“Who would want to take her and kill us?” David asked thinking of anyone Melissa might have been weary of. “I still don’t understand how they planted a bomb in the mansion.”
“Someone working in the mansion could have planted it. That’s why we can’t let them know we are alive until we find the person behind this.” Mr Edward said looking at the screen. “We have to find Melissa soon. Every minute we waste, we risk her life.”
“My team is checking every employee’s background and from the information I gathered, that bomb was remotely triggered. They watched us on the hidden camera waiting for the perfect time to strike. When we were in the same room. Whoever took Melissa wanted her to watch the explosion. I think this person wants Melissa alive.” Mark said.
“You think so?” David turned his gaze to Mark. “Is this the same person using Melissa’s identity?” David inquired.
“Yes. The police interrogate that hotel employee and it seems the person who sent her to call Melissa outside used the same name. They also found the man Melissa shot. He was dead with multiple shots in his chest. This is a person with no remorse, they will do anything to get what they want.” Mark outlined the information James had sent him.
“We have no lead. How do we find her now?” David slammed on the seat feeling useless.
“Son, this is not on you. Don’t blame yourself.” Mr Edward said to David taking a seat beside him.
“I promised to take care of her grandpa. If anything happens to her, I’ll never forgive myself.”
“This was well planned. If you had gone along, they might have killed you. Do me a favor son, and get your head on the game. Do what you do best and bring your sister home.”
“Thank you, grandfather.” David wiped his eyes looking away from the old man. Mr. Edward tapped his back with a smile on his face remembering how Luke used to do the same when he was young.
“I know where to find her.” Mark rushed into the room holding his beeping phone. “It’s not far from here, let’s pull all the men we have.” He suggested showing them the map they had to follow and Mr. Edward called for arms and more men from his company.
In seconds everything was mapped out.
“Be careful.” The old man hugged Mark and David as they walked out after formulating a plan to rescue Melissa.
“You had a tracker on her and didn’t say anything all this time?” David asked annoyed by Mark’s callousness.
“I didn’t say anything since I was waiting for her to turn it on. It only activates when you touch it in panic or fear.” Mark explained.
“So she knew when to touch the tracker?” David asked.
“No, she had no idea. I guess it took her long since she was tied up.” Mark said loading his gun.
“You are… I honestly don’t get how you put a tracker on someone? Which most probably can’t help.” David said getting agitated wishing he could punch him.
“Melissa got rid of every tracker I planted on her, so I had to improvise. It worked, didn’t it? We will save her no matter what.” Tapping David on the shoulder, Mark left the room and called his men.
