Family
“Mum, daddy!” As they stepped out of the car, Tommy ran over from the house to receive them.
“Tommy, Tommy I told you not to run to the car like that.” Out of breath, Jane came after him shouting. “Sorry Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Johnson.”
“It’s okay Jane.” Melissa smiled at her then at the little boy before them. “Tommy you have to be more careful and listen to Jane always.” Melissa scolded him.
“Sorry, mum. I missed you and daddy.” Gazing up at them, his eyes turned red as his mouth quivered.
“It’s okay son, we missed you so much too.” Mark raffled his hair. “I got you lots of toys to play with. Do you want to see them?” Coaxing him, he carried him into the house.
“Where’s everyone?” Walking into the empty quiet house, Melissa inquired.Text content © NôvelDrama.Org.
“For the first time, Mary is not at the door to receive me.”
“That’s because they are preparing a surprise for you and mum.” Tommy squeaked getting down from his father’s arms and ran to the backyard.
“They are in the garden.” Jane smiled directing them to the garden.
Above the dinner table, there was a congratulations banner hanging overhead. Mary had organized every employee to prepare a meal to celebrate Mark and Melissa’s engagement.
“Wow! This is lovely, thank you.” Hand in hand they walked to the transformed garden.
With a bright smile on her face, Melissa looked from all the employees clapping cheerfully to the plentiful food.
“Welcome, have a sit.”
“Thank you, Jane. Sorry baby for scolding you earlier.” Melissa apologized helping Tommy Sit between her and Mark.
“Welcome, when I heard about the engagement, I thought it was right to celebrate,” Mary explained handing them a glass of wine each.
“This is lovely thank you Mary and everyone for being here to celebrate with us.” Melissa said as they raised their glasses to toast. “We will set the wedding date soon.” She said answering the question in everyone’s mind.
“So I will get a baby sister?” He asked his father.
“Yes, soon.” He smiled broadly looking at Melissa. “Thank you Mary for setting this wonderful surprise.
They sat at the round table enjoying the delicious sumptuous dinner they prepared. Making jokes and fun reminded her of the first night she spent in the villa. Everyone welcomed and accepted her as part of the family, but looking at her aunt’s bright face made her miss her mother more.
….
“May I come in?” She asked knocking at the door.
“Aunt, yes come in.” Seated in front of the dressing mirror, Melissa was blow drying her hair.
“May I?” Melissa shook her head in agreement. Taking the blow dryer from her Betty stood behind Melissa helping dry her hair. “Are you happy dear?” She asked looking at Melissa’s reflection in the mirror.
“Yes aunt, I am very happy just wish mother was here.” She said touching her necklace.
“She is always watching over you.” She said smiling remembering the good times she had with her sister.
“You always fell asleep whenever I touched your hair, you don’t remember since you were a tiny baby then. Your mother always said I had a magical touch to make you fall asleep.” Yawning, Melissa giggled.
“Guess she was right. Aunt, did you talk to mother before the accident?” She inquired placing the dryer back.
With a heavy sigh, Betty sat beside her. “No, we had not spoken in days. You know, though we often talked on the phone, your mother always made time to visit me in the province. Now that she is not here, I wish I didn’t put so much distance between us.” She frowned reflecting on all her sister did for her.
“I don’t know why but it crossed my mind that mother and father were having problems. On her birthday we were at the beach, like we always did but she was not happy. Whenever I asked what was wrong, she assured me everything was okay. Aunt, did she ever tell you anything? If she had any problems with father?” She asked turning to face Betty.
“No, she never mentioned anything. If they had problems she would have shared with me. Your father loved my sister so much. He would never intentionally hurt her.” She said smiling.
“How did they meet? I never got to ask.” Inquired Melissa.
“It was such a coincidence.” She closed her eyes remembering that afternoon.
“Us three my sister, Diana’s mum, and I lived together with your mother’s support. Her job could not cater for all the expenses since she was paying for my college tuition. On that day, we went to the supermarket for some glossary. Lydia, Diana’s mother, admired some cosmetics that were on sale but she couldn’t afford them. Nor did my sister have enough money to pay for them. On our way out of the store, the security man stopped us, asking to check our bags. We had no idea what was going on until they took the cosmetics we had not paid for from our bag. Lydia had sneaked it without our knowledge.”
“Surprisingly I didn’t think godmother would do something like that.”
“She used to get into so much trouble but changed when she got married to Diana’s father.”
“So how did you pay for the item?”
“We tried. Begging them not to call the police we emptied our pockets but the money was not enough. Luckily a man walking into the store. When he saw our predicament, he offered to pay the bill. Grateful for his help, we asked how we could thank him since we didn’t have money to repay but all he asked for was for my sister to join him for a meal. That my dear was how your parents got to know each other.”
“Wow! That’s romantic. dad was her hero.”
“Yes he was. I’m off to bed now, it’s getting late. Don’t think too much about what might have happened honey. Your parents loved you so much.” She kissed her goodnight then taped her back,
“Goodnight aunt.” After her aunt left the room Melissa went through the adjacent door to check on Tommy.
Walking into the room, she heard laughter and running water directing her to the bathroom. Stopping at the doorway, Melissa watched Tommy giggle splashing water at his father. Smiling, she went to the closet to get his pajamas, not interrupting their playtime.
After the shower she helped him dress, tucking him in bed as his father got a storybook from the shelf. As Tommy fell asleep, he clung onto his mother’s arm forcing her to sleep beside him.
With the mother and son sleeping soundly, Mark got up, stared at them briefly before leaving the room.
….
At the meeting place, Mark found James and his two best friends Jason and Andrew waiting. They were secretly working with the government to end illegal organizations in the city.
“So Mark, did you confess your feelings?” Robert inquired, joining them at the round table.
“No, I couldn’t just walk in and tell her. You know what, I’ve been in love with you forever.”
“So what did you do to convince her to go with you to the island?” Andrew asked.
“He proposed an intimate diner with candlelights and flowers. Going on one knee like that, she didn’t stand a chance of saying no to him. I just sent you the video.” James told them, placing his phone back in his pocket.
“Wow! man this is great, so romantic didn’t know you had it in you, congratulations.” Andrew complimented hugging him after watching the video on his phone.
“You secretly installed a camera to spy on my engagement?” Mark inquired, taking Robert’s phone.
“Sorry man, we had to document this.” James bowed while laughing.
“I guess I’ll use this idea to propose too.” Jason said.
“Who are you proposing to? You never stick with one woman for more than two months.” Andrew questioned.
“Speak for yourself Andrew, I’m a changed man looking for my one true love like Mark did.”
“Is grandfather okay with it? I know how much he wants Sasha to be your wife.” Robert asked Mark, ignoring the two.
“Grandfather will do anything his great grandson asks for. The important thing to him right now is getting an heir to take over when I’m old.”
“Ha ha ha that grandfather Johnson for you. He asked me when I’ll get myself involved in the company, which has never closed my mind. I love my job, you know working in the army has always been my dream.” Robert said.
“Soon enough you have to take over from Uncle Richard.” James told him. Though he worked as Mark’s assistant, he also worked with Mr. Richard, sending him the monthly reports whenever his wife couldn’t personally oversee them.
“So Mark, when is the wedding?” Jason inquired, changing the conversation.
“Melissa wants the engagement kept secret for now so we are holding off the wedding for now.”
“You can get your marriage license registered first then have the wedding later.” Everyone agreed with Jason encouraging Mark to have the marriage at the civil court.
“Getting back to the day’s issue. What do we have on the Stevens?” Andrew asked for his laptop.
“For now we have nothing, I asked our informant to lay low when they got suspicious after the police raided the warehouse.” James said, checking his laptop.
“We have to get enough evidence to end their drug business. I heard there is a new drug being introduced in the market.” Andrew turned to Mark. “Has he given you more information?” He inquired.
“Not yet. James do contact him, we need to set up a meeting soon.”
“I got someone secretly following him, though it’s quite hard to track him down, I found out he has some companies overseas. Looking at the background it seems they were not legally established.” He sent them emails about the interviews with some former employees.
“So he was into trafficking.” Jason said going through the interviews.
“He’s using me to get rid of his competitors.” Mark slapped the table.
“If so, why ask you to protect Melissa? Did you find any information about Mr. White?” Robert asked.
Shaking his head, James told them how hard it was digging for information about Mr. White. All he had was information about his company and family but nothing about him before he established the Whites transport company.
“What will happen if Melissa is in a way involved in this? Will it affect your relationship?” Jason at Mark keenly.
“I will not let anything get between us. We will send more men following him, we have to find everything we can about his meeting with Mr. White. James gets someone who works closely with the Stevens, someone they trust.” Mark said ending the meeting.
