"Last night nothing happened, right?"

As he opened his mouth to say something, Emma Johnson shot him a glance that cut through the air.

Ethan Carter found himself momentarily speechless; Emma's detached gaze felt as cold as that of a stranger.

Since she had laid it out so plainly, what more could he say?

Breakfast concluded in silence between them.

"It's hard to get a cab around here, you know that. Let me take you back to the office."

Ethan offered, willing to lend a hand. Five years ago, he would never have bothered with such things, but now he found himself unable to stop thinking about Emma's well-being. "Then I'll take you up on that."

Emma accepted the offer with a calm demeanor. Though she had no desire to maintain any emotional ties with Ethan, she didn't go out of her way to push him away. After all, he was still her superior, and that connection lingered. "Not a problem,"

Ethan replied, his voice steady as he made his way to the door.

"Mrs. Zhang, we're leaving now. Please let Grandpa know when he wakes up."

Pangs of guilt tugged at him, and he parted his lips, "I'm sorry for what happened last night. If you have any requests, just let me know."

"Thank you for your concern, Mr. Carter, but I've made myself clear-I don't want to dwell on it."

Emma smiled faintly, her gaze revealing a hint of resistance.

Even if faced with insurmountable difficulties, she wouldn't seek help from Ethan. She was acutely aware that owing him a favor would only complicate their relationship further. Having made her point, Emma turned her head away, signaling that she was done with the conversation.

Ethan's expression flashed with helplessness.

Without waiting for his response, Emma strode toward the pharmacy. In just two minutes, she returned with a small box in hand.

"This is the contraceptive pill I just bought. Since I said last night was an accident, there's no need for us to dwell on it, and I certainly won't be entangled with you in any way."
