Chapter 105
"What's wrong?" Ethan Carter's voice was low and slightly hoarse as he answered the phone, his heart racing a bit when he noticed it was Emma Johnson calling unexpectedly.
"Sorry, I dialed the wrong number," Emma replied briskly before hanging up without another word.
The reason she had called Ethan was because she had accidentally knocked over her water glass onto her smartphone, leaving the screen drenched. In her haste to wipe it off with a paper towel, she had inadvertently dialed his number. By the time she realized it and aimed to hang up, the call had already gone through.
Ethan's expression shifted for a moment, a fleeting look of disappointment crossing his face, which didn't escape the notice of Ryan Cooper, who was nearby.
With a slight frown, Ethan placed his phone aside casually.
Kai Harrison, who was always quick to pick up on things, immediately raised an eyebrow. "Ethan, Emma's back? When did that happen?"
After pausing for two seconds, Ethan finally responded, "She's been back for a while now. She's working at my company."
Kai's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, so not only is Emma back, but she's also working for you? That's unexpected."
"Ethan, you're not bothered because of Emma, are you?" Ryan interjected, pinning down the crux of the issue. He could sense Ethan's attitude towards Emma had changed.
Ethan nodded slowly in response. He didn't feel the need to hide anything from his friends and admitted, "Yeah, I guess I am."© 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
Ryan shared Kai's disbelief; it was hard to reconcile this new information with the Ethan they both knew. After all, Ethan had once insisted on divorcing Emma for Olivia Brooks, and he had been resolute in his decision. Three Years to Love
"Ethan, what are you thinking? When Emma was all over you, you didn't have feelings for her. Are you saying you have feelings for her now?" Kai probed, his tone half- teasing yet serious.
Ethan's brow furrowed deeper. "I really don't know," he replied, irritation creeping into his voice as he took a large swig from a bottle nearby.
Kai could hardly believe his eyes. This wasn't the composed Ethan he had known for years; he had never seen him so out of control before.
Given the situation, they both decided it was best to keep silent and just drink alongside him, knowing that there was little they could do to help him feel better.
Before long, Ethan, succumbing to the effects of the alcohol, began to mumble,
"Emma...".
Kai sighed heavily. "It looks like Ethan really regrets everything," he murmured as he helped the inebriated Ethan to his feet.
"Yeah, let's get him home," Ryan said, shaking his head. After getting Ethan back to his place, they finally left.
The next morning
Emma was jolted awake by the sound of her alarm. As she reached for her phone to silence it, she noticed a new message from Ryan Cooper. "Morning!"
Responding politely, Emma hurriedly washed up and got ready for the day ahead.
Once she was all set, she rushed out the door toward her company. There was a daily morning meeting, and anyone who was late would have their salary docked by half. She certainly didn't want that kind of embarrassment to happen to her! Just as she stepped into the office, nearly late, she saw Olivia waiting for the elevator.
