Miranda was deep in thought when suddenly, a scream shattered the silence. She looked up and saw Mrs. Santiago’s face had turned grave, “Mrs. Lindberg, watch out-”
What the hell just happened?

Miranda was still trying to process when, out of nowhere, a force shoved her hard. She lost her balance, staggered back and crashed to the floor. Pain shot through her arm as screams and shouts exploded around her.
“Penelope!” Leah cried out in a panic.
“Mrs. Lindberg, are you okay?” Someone helped Miranda up. In her high heels, Miranda had been pushed so hard she’d twisted her ankle. She winced in pain, but as she took in the scene, she was struck dumb.
“Penelope!”
The floor was a mess of shattered crystals from the chandelier. Penelope was pinned under the massive fixture, blood pooling around her. She was already unconscious. It was Penelope who had pushed Miranda out of the way when the chandelier fell.
“My baby! My baby girl…” Leah was on her knees, on the verge of a breakdown. She turned to Miranda, “Mrs. Lindberg, Mrs. Lindberg! Please, save my girl…”
Miranda was utterly shocked.
“The ambulance is here!”
Then, Penelope was carried off on a stretcher. Everyone rushed to the hospital. The charity dinner came to a sudden end, leaving the socialites to whisper among themselves.
Every year, Miranda hosted this charity event to do some good things for the world. But now, her daughter-in-law and unborn grandchild might be gone.
Lucian rushed to the hospital as soon as he got the call. At the end of the corridor was the operating room. His handsome face was grim. He strode forward, eyes tracing the blood trail from the stair entrance all the way to the OR.
-“Mom.”
Miranda saw him and went to him. She was barely holding it together, “Lucian…”
Lucian glanced at Miranda. Seeing she was okay, he felt a bit relieved. His gaze was locked on the OR. The display showed Penelope
had been in there for 20 minutes.
Miranda approached. Lucian pulled her into his arms. “It’s okay, mom.”
Miranda’s eyes were filled with tears, “Penelope saved me. If it weren’t for her, I would be the one lying in there. But Penelope and her
child…”
Lucian was also feeling heavy. He held Miranda. Miranda cried on his shoulder.
About five minutes later, footsteps echoed in the corridor. Christopher rushed over. He and Leah had been in a cold war for over a month, but seeing Leah’s tearful eyes, all their differences seemed to fade away in an instant. Leah threw herself into his arms, beating his chest with her hands as she cried uncontrollably. Christopher was staring at the OR.
In the corridor, the soft sobbing sounded especially mournful. The OR door remained firmly shut.
Everyone’s heart was in their throats. A few minutes later, footsteps echoed again.
Zachary, Cora, and Carter hurried over. Carter’s face was stern. They had all been informed about what happened. The chandelier fell; Penelope was crushed under it while saving Miranda. From the looks of it, both the child and the mother’s lives were in danger.
Cora looked at the devastated Leah, offering her comfort.
