The Alpha’s Dynasty

Look elsewhere

Maya

“Why wouldn’t I be arrogant?” Harry asked. He and I were in his office. I was standing in front of his desk, looking at the document I brought to him five minutes back. “I’m the most handsome and intelligent man in this company. Let’s see, Maya. If you were asked to date any man here, who would it be?”

“Anyone but you, Harry Smith. Being arrogant isn’t attractive, you know. Try that on Kim.”

“Are you sure? Would you be okay with me being with someone you hate?”

“You can be with whoever you want,” I stated. “I don’t care. Just sign the document because I have quite a lot to do now that Kim’s working with you-know-who. I wonder why he needs two assistants anyway. His old one returned but he won’t let go of mine. Clearly, this man is here to ruin my life.”

“Why are you in such a hurry?” He asked.

I closed my eyes and inhaled. “Why do you always make an effort to delay me whenever I come here?”

“Because I’m falling for you,” his eyes bore into mine. “What do you have to say to that?”

I shook my head, knowing he was messing with me as always. I didn’t know if I could say we were actually friends but sometimes we hang out after work. Sometimes, we got into such arguments that made me think we’d never talk again. “Shut up, Harry. You’ve been talking nonsense for so long and I don’t have time for this.”

He stood up and walked around his desk to where I was standing. He held my hand and looked directly into my eyes. I shook my hand free before he could notice how that slight contact made me feel. I looked into his intense dark eyes and swallowed then avert my gaze to the document on the table.

“Please sign,” I looked at him again and he went back to sit. He quickly signed and I grabbed the document. “Thanks, Smith.”

“No problem,” he said with his beautiful smile. I could watch smile all day because his smile was good. Harry was actually very good looking, and I thought if he asked me out, I would actually say yes. “Come back soon.”

I rolled my eyes and open the door. I was startled to see Kim’s outstretched hand. She was about to knock. “Morning.”

“Morning Maya,” Kim smiled. “I’ve been looking for you.” She turned to Harry who was watching us. “Can I please come in, Mr. Smith? I have news for the two of you.”

“Okay,” I said. What kind of news could Kim be having for us?Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.

I stood aside and let Kim enter, closing the door behind her.

“Two weeks ago when I first started working here, I heard you two talking about the need for the Employee of the month award.” She said, sitting on the chair across from Harry. “I’d like to tell you that I’ve managed to make Mr. Miller see its usefulness. The announcement will be out today and from next month, the competition will be on.” She paused, probably for dramatic effect. She was enjoying it. “I’m going to work so hard.”

“Okay,” I say, opening the door. I was annoyed that Kim has achieved that in only two weeks. I have been trying to convince Mr. Miller, our human resources manager for so many months. Knowing Mr. Miller, I could tell something was up. I also knew that Kim only pushed for the award to make me feel bad and to let me know that there were things she could do better than me. “Thanks for the good news. I have to go now.”

“Don’t we need to celebrate?” Harry asked me. “You’ve wanted this for such a long time.”

His insensitivity didn’t surprise me. I walked out of the room, not stopping until I was in my office. I sat on the table and wondered what I had done wrong to deserve that. Kim went to Harry’s office just to mock me. I could not stand the fact that she now thought she was better than me. She was so disrespectful I almost felt bad for her. She was wrong if she thought her actions would help her build a solid career. She probably thought she was on top of the world but one day I knew that everything will crumble upon her.

I heard the sound of a knock on the door. “Come in.”

Harry entered and I gave him a death glare. “Harry, please go away if you’ve come here to mock me. I’ve had just about enough of all that.”

He shook his head and sat down. “I’m sorry, Lee. I truly regret making that comment, especially in front of Kim. I was wrong.”

“Whatever,” I let out a sigh. “Just go away. The employee of the month award will be a good thing for the company anyway. I may not have been able to get it put in place but someone else has done it. That’s a good thing.”

“I won’t leave unless you forgive me,” he told me, placing his palm on my hand. A jolt of electricity coursed all over my body. What the hell was wrong with me? A few days ago I had been crushing heavily on the new CEO and now I was feeling things for Harry? Strange.

“Why does it matter to you, anyway?” I pulled my hand from under his. Several emotions were swirling all over me and I couldn’t let him see how much his touch affected me.

“You’re my friend and I don’t want to fight with you because of some little misguided girl.”

I studied him and he seemed so sincere. Besides, it had always been very hard for me to stay mad at him for long. “Okay, I forgive you.” There was no way some silly comment was going to separate me from my favorite person at work.

“Thanks, Maya.” He said, smiling. “Aren’t you just the most beautiful human in the world?”

I was unable to stop myself from smiling. “Stop it.”

We were not dating but I loved having his support. Zane Carrington was never going to be mine anyway. Maybe it was time for me to set my eyes elsewhere.
