Chapter 79
"There's a document that I need you to help me sort out."
He felt extremely conflicted. On one hand, he wanted to let her know that he felt guilty for what he had done to her and hated himself, but on the other hand, he did not dare to open his mouth to talk to her. He was afraid that she would run away once she found out.
"Okay."
Jessica nodded. It was all right as long as he was talking to her about matters relating to work.
"You've worked hard."
As Trevor spoke, he turned his head away reluctantly. He then walked forward and stared at Jessica from the corner of his eye.
He had to turn to steal a glance at her every few steps he walked.Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
He was very afraid that once he stopped looking, she would vanish without a trace.
As they returned to the office, Trevor removed his jacket and took out a document before passing it to Jessica.
Jessica received the document and her heart seized with shock.
The document was a medical diagnosis of Melissa's unsound state of mind.
Jessica held the document, and her breathing was unstable. "Melissa was sent to the mental hospital? Had Trevor caused it? Why?" she thought. "I'm sorry. I took the wrong document."
Without a hint of emotion, Trevor took another document from his shelves and passed it to Jessica.
"It's all right."
Jessica also pretended that nothing was wrong as she returned the document in her hands to Trevor and took the new document from him.
"The document is classified top-secret. I've just entered the company for two days. Are you sure that I can see this?"
"Yes. I'm very pleased with your work ability. When we return to the company, I'll give you more benefits and rewards." Trevor sat on the office chair. Although he tried his best to control it, his tone was very gentle.
"There's something I want to say to you, Mr. Gulliford."
Jessica stood in front of the office table and raised her head to look at Trevor.
"Yes? What's the matter?"
Trevor met her gaze, and his heart skipped a beat.
"I wish to resign, as I have some family matters..."
Jessica felt a little awkward as she hemmed and hawed. It was difficult for her to bring up her resignation.
"What has happened?"
Trevor's eyebrows furrowed subconsciously. He lowered his head to look at the document and appeared to be absent-minded.
"My family... My husband is ill, and I need to take care of him."
For him to not suspect her, she softened her tone and spoke to him gently.
"Your husband? He's sick?"
Trevor pulled on his tie and felt a little suffocated.
"Yes... It's a very serious illness."
Jessica nodded continuously and did not dare to look him in the eye.
Trevor placed the documents in his hand on the table and walked past the office table before standing in front of her.
He said seriously, "If it's a very
serious illness, he probably can't be
saved. My condolences. There are special leaves and company psychiatrists for employees who have lost their loved ones. Do remember to apply for it."
"What are you saying?"
Jessica was enraged.
"What's this? Which leader would say such things? How inhumane of him!" she fumed silently.
"Oh yes, I forgot that this is Trevor. He does not have an ounce of humanity, to begin with," she reminded herself.
"What about it? It's written on the
company contract that if employees resign without consent from the company, they will have to pay the losses caused by their resignations," Trevor calmly said. Although the company had never requested for any employee to pay that amount, the woman in front of him was a special case.
"You're my secretary. If you quit, I'll be unhappy. When I'm unhappy, the business will be affected. As for how much you have to pay, do you want to hear the actual amount? It's an amount that you definitely can't afford."
He spoke brazenly and appeared not to care about Jessica's uncomprehending expression.
"You're the renowned Mr. Gulliford of Horington. How can you use such unreasonable means to exploit people? I really don't know what you see in me for you to value me so much." Jessica was very unhappy.
"What about it? I left and came back again multiple times. In the end, I still have to end up in the palm of his hands?"
"It's no use saying all this."
Trevor's expression did not change. No matter what she said, he would never let her go.
