Chapter 14: Fake Ring
Despite her raging thoughts filled with doubt and questions, Kathlyn managed to retort, trying to maintain her cool facade.
“You’re lying, Kourtney! You can’t just switch off your feelings like that. Brandon used to be your whole world, but now, he’s with me. You’re merely trying to convince yourself that you’re over him, but deep down, you know you still love and want him!”
“And stop feeling so fly! Brandon was the best thing that ever happened to you. He was way too good for you, and that’s the reason you were too invested in him. Too bad he loves me, not you. We all know you can never get another man as good as him.” Kathlyn continued to bark, her frustration getting the better of her.
She couldn’t bear the idea that Kourtney was genuinely happy without Brandon. That thought shattered her illusion of victory and made her feel insignificant. So, Kathlyn decided to up the ante, hoping to push Kourtney’s buttons further and make her break down.
“Ah ah ah!” Kourtney let out a humorous laugh. The sound was surprisingly deafening as if she’d just heard the funniest joke ever.
It was funny because it seemed like her sister was trying too hard to convince herself more than anything. Kourtney knew Kathlyn was desperate to believe she had won some kind of competition by snatching her man.
‘In your dreams! I even got married to a much better man today.’ Kourtney thought. Even though she was tempted to tell Kathlyn, she decided against it. Right now was not the time to reveal that information.
She suddenly felt a strange sense of satisfaction as she thought about her new husband, The Almighty Billionaire CEO Sebastian Woods. She wondered how miserable Kathlyn’s reaction would be, when she found out about her marriage to him, especially since Kathlyn believed she could not land a man as good as Brandon. ‘It would be so satisfying to watch.’
Kathlyn really thought Brandon was the grand prize, and she’d won. But it was even more laughable because she had just married the same man Brandon had been looking up to as his Idol for years. He always dreamt of becoming like Sebastian, wanting to be as successful and thrive in the business world, but it could only happen in his miserable imagination.
The best part was her husband was known as a self-made billionaire, not a trust-fund baby and wannabe business tycoon like Brandon.
He had worked his way to the top of the business ladder and helped to transform his family company which was almost at extinction before he took over. Brandon was not even close to achieving anything similar to this, and Kourtney knew that he would never be able to. Sebastian was 100 times richer and more successful than Brandon would ever be.
Her heart swelled with pride, knowing she was now the wife of someone as accomplished and admirable as Sebastian Woods. Although the man was indeed annoying with his egotistic behavior, she felt it was good enough than being married to someone like Brandon.
Kourtney let out another mocking giggle, thinking about when Brandon always told her he always admired Sebastian Woods and how he aspired to achieve even a small fraction of the success he had. She placed her left hand over her lips to stifle her continuous laughter.
As Kathlyn stood watching Kourtney laugh cheerfully, her face flushed with anger and resentment. The taunts she had hoped would break Kourtney’s spirit had only fueled her newfound confidence. It infuriated her that Kourtney seemed calm, carefree, and unshaken.
Soon enough, Kathlyn’s expression transformed quickly from anger to disbelief as she caught sight of something when Kourtney placed her hand over her lips. Her eyes immediately fell on the shining diamond ring worn on Kourtney’s finger.Exclusive © content by N(ô)ve/l/Drama.Org.
‘This ring,’ she thought. It looks exactly like one of the famous “Forever Promise Rings.”
The ‘Forever Promise’ pair of wedding rings were priced at a mind-blowing $80 million. It was one of the most expensive pair in the world, with a stunning 31-carat oval cut diamond in each. The diamond was an exquisite rare blue gem that sparkled brightly among other gemstones.
The rings were newly designed by a world-famous jeweler and had been the talk of the town for weeks. It had made headlines for being a true masterpiece of art and craftsmanship. There were numerous articles in newspapers, magazines, and even on TV talking about the extravagant rings, so Kathlyn could easily recognize them.
Kathlyn couldn’t believe her eyes. ‘It had to be a fake knock-off,’ she convinced herself, trying to dismiss the idea that Kourtney could possibly be wearing such a priceless piece of jewelry. Her mind raced with thoughts of how she could expose Kourtney’s deception.
Meanwhile, Kourtney noticed the direction of her sister’s gaze and couldn’t help but flash a mischievous smile. She knew what Kathlyn had just noticed, and for a moment, she debated whether she should say anything, or not. But Kathlyn beat her to it.
“Nice ring, sis,” She said in a mocking tone.
“Thanks,” Kourtney replied with a nonchalant shrug, still wearing that playful grin that further irked Kathlyn.
“You know, you never seem to amaze me, Kourt! So now you bought a fake wedding ring to feel better after your engagement to Brandon ended, right? You’re so desperate to get back his attention now. Isn’t it?
“Oh, this?” Kourtney replied, extending her hand to display the ring. “It’s not fake. It’s actually the real one.”
“Is that supposed to be a joke? You expect me to believe that you, of all people, managed to snag a ring like that? It’s probably just some cheap knock-off you bought from some sketchy street vendor.”
Kathlyn couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming urge to discredit Kourtney’s claims. She was entirely positive the ring was nothing but a cheap imitation or a knock-off version of the famous jewelry piece.
It was said that the couple who would purchase and use the rings as their wedding bands would last forever! And last week, when she saw it being marketed in a magazine, she had jokingly asked Brandon if they could buy the couple pair for their wedding. But sadly, he said he couldn’t afford them even if they were half the price.
She couldn’t fathom how Kourtney, whom she had always considered inferior, had managed to acquire such an exquisite piece of jewelry. She thought it had to be a counterfeit as it was simply impossible for her to afford it, especially when even Brandon couldn’t.
“I already told you it’s not fake. Believe it or not, the truth remains the same. Besides, I don’t owe you any explanations.”
Kathlyn’s disbelief only grew stronger. “Yeah, right! Is that supposed to impress me? Don’t tell me you think that ring is real! You’ve always been one to wear cheap knock-offs. I bet you got it from a flea market.” She sneered.
“You know, it’s quite amusing to see how threatened you feel by a simple piece of jewelry. But let me assure you it is real and not fake.”
Kourtney found it very amusing because if Kathlyn could react like this to just the site of her wedding ring, how much more when she finds out she even married “The Sebastian Woods.” Her pathetic little sister would probably pass out from envy and bitterness.
“Nice try, Kourtney. Did you really think I’d fall for some fake ring? The real one is worth 80 Million Dollars. So, tell me, how can you ever afford an 80-million-dollar ring just like that? You must be making this shit up to make yourself feel better. You’re delusional!” Kathlyn scoffed, rolling her eyes.
Kourtney was taken aback for a moment, as she thought, ‘This ring is 80 Million Dollars?’
She couldn’t believe how her new husband could buy something so expensive in a flash. She remembered it only took less than 20 minutes for his assistant to purchase and bring it to the city hall. Just how much money and power did the man possess?
While Kourtney remained silent and lost in thoughts, Kathlyn took that as a sign of her shame in being caught with a knock-off.
She scoffed, “You’re trying too hard to impress with that ring, huh? But we all know it’s fake. You’re just trying to keep up appearances and get attention from Brandon after he dumped you. How embarrassing!”
“Look, Kathlyn. I understand you find it hard to accept. But you know what? Maybe you’re right. It’s probably fake.”
Kourtney didn’t want to bother arguing with Kathlyn anymore, or else she might be forced to reveal her marriage to Sebastian. She just wasn’t ready to do that now. The man gave her a one-week grace, so she figured it would be better to find the perfect time to tell everyone, especially their parents. She couldn’t waste her time on Kathlyn any longer.
“Whatever you say is right, Kathlyn. You can think whatever you want. I’m going going to bed now,” Kourtney added before walking away in hurried steps. Thankfully, Kathlyn didn’t hold her back this time, or she might throw a fit.
Meanwhile, as much as Kathlyn tried to dismiss the validity of the ring, a seed of doubt have already been planted in her mind. She had to admit the cheap knock-off indeed looked like the real deal. The way it glowed under the light was mesmerizing and weirdly authentic. Her mind was suddenly filled with doubts and uncertainties.
Kathlyn thought, ‘How could a fake ring sparkle like that? Could it really be the real one?
Her mind was in turmoil, racing with so many questions at the same time, which made her feel uneasy. “Even if it was the real one, how could she come across such an extravagant ring? Did she win the lottery, rob a bank, or find a hidden treasure? How possible?”
