Chapter 0404
Chapter 0404
Henry looked at Barox in disbelief. He asked Candice, "Are you... Are you kidding me?"
He clearly didn't believe it, even turning back to glance at the sullen-faced Alex.
He had already told most people that his daughter was in love with the boss of Aether Corporation and they were about to get married soon. But now Candice told him that the child wasn't Alex's?
Instead, it belonged to this boy who looked like he had nothing.
Henry incredulously asked Candice again, "Even if you don't want to help me, you shouldn't make such jokes with me. You're ruining your own reputation!"
Seeing Henry's appearance, a mix of defeat but unwillingness to accept it, Candice lowered her head and smiled. She took the initiative to hold Barox's arm and said, "What's the point of deceiving you? Would I make a mistake about whose child it is?"
There was a hint of imperceptible ease in her tone, and her gaze drifted towards Alex, her voice flatly saying, "Mr. Elysian had suffered and endured a lot of grievances because of this."
Holding onto Barox, she seemed to have found her backbone, and her demeanor became lively as she spoke.
Alex stood ten meters away, his stern face showing no sign of relaxation. His dark eyes were fixed tightly on Candice's hand holding onto Barox's arm.
Barox had a hip-hop street style, while Candice wore a light-colored work suit, looking capable and neat. These two completely different individuals stood together, looking surprisingly harmonious.
Barox was tall and well-built, not inferior to Alex, plus his regular exercise meant he exuded a strong youthful air.
As Candice and Barox went upstairs, they could still see Henry's face looking greatly devastated, as if Candice had done something terribly wrong to him.
The elevator was empty. After going up one floor, Candice let go of Barox's arm, and the calmness on her face shattered. She pinched her brow and said, "Sorry."
Barox looked at her, his face showing no embarrassment, just taking out his phone and fiddling with it.
Candice glanced over and saw him texting.
Sensing her gaze, he explained without changing his expression, "I'm reporting progress to Yana, almost thought this job was going to fall through."
Candice pondered for a few seconds. "What job?"
"Yana asked me to pretend to be the father of your child, five thousand a day. It's been a while without any progress, so I was planning to go back to Dorrington today."
No wonder he had already packed his luggage.
But Candice still questioned, "When did she tell you?"
Barox held up his phone. "Just now."
Candice saw the chat records on his phone, which indeed stopped just now, with Yana clearly pricing it at five thousand a day, which was very eye-catching.
She fell silent for a moment. No wonder Barox had circled back.
With him as a shield, she felt much more secure. At least Henry's side was resolved, and even Alex could be held off.
She went to the balcony to call Yana. Regardless of anything else, she couldn't let Yana bear the cost of five thousand a day.
"Hello, darling, why did you suddenly call me?" As soon as the call connected, Yana's coquettish and affected voice burst out.
Candice didn't want to hear her pretense. She said helplessly, "I'll give Barox the money."
"What money? Why are you giving him money?" Yana pretended to be ignorant.
"Stop pretending. Barox showed me your chat records, five thousand a day."
Even she couldn't help but laugh at what she said.
Yana's approach was good in a way. At least both parties knew it was purely for money, so there was no risk of bringing up other unnecessary issues. It was quite straightforward.
She said softly, "Thank you."
However, Yana didn't hear her thanks. She was still focused on disdainfully looking at Barox, calling him a little traitor.
Candice shook her head. She said, "When you have time to come to Solaris, I'll introduce you to a friend. You two should get along well."
She was referring to Angela. Both Yana and Angela were indeed quite unconventional. Original from NôvelDrama.Org.
Yana casually complained, "I don't have time at all. I'm constantly battling my parents, you have no idea how unreasonable they are. They've even started pressuring me to marry Mason."
Yana didn't want to talk much about Mason. She hung up after just a couple of sentences.
When Candice returned to her room, Barox had already left. He had sent her a message, saying if there was something urgent just text him.
As Candice calmed down, she remembered she hadn't told Alex about Abel's matter.
Hesitating for a moment, she called Alex.
Alex picked up quickly but only said three words before hanging up.
"Open the door."
Candice paused and looked at the door. She lowered her gaze and sent a message to Barox before opening the door.
Sure enough, Alex was outside the door, emanating a heavy coldness. His black eyes seemed even deeper and unfathomable.
He looked at Candice with tightly pressed lips, but the suppressed emotions were palpable.
Meeting his gaze, Candice, still in her unchanged clothes, clean and refreshed, stood tall and confident.
She blocked the door and said lightly, "I'm not letting you in. It's not good to indulge a child throwing tantrums."
Alex's eyes narrowed slightly.
Candice continued, "Today, I went to Abel's lab and found out something. The power outage incident that happened between us in the lab last time was caused by Abel." She remained composed, speaking to Alex matter-of-factly.
However, Alex said nothing. His gaze remained fixed on Candice's face, his eyes deep as if trying to ensnare her in an abyss.
His tone was low, his voice unchanged, but there was a slight pause when he spoke, "Are you telling the truth?"
"Mrs. Parker wouldn't lie to me," Candice replied.
His voice remained the same as he continued, "I'm asking about the child and that man."
Standing in the corridor, under the warm light, his shoulders carried a coldness.
She silently looked at him for a while. She saw her reflection in Alex's dark, gloomy eyes.
She lowered her eyes and casually said, "Why would I lie to you?"
