Chapter 0394
Chapter 0394
After returning to the hospital with Hanley, Candice was thoroughly examined by a doctor. After the check-up, Hanley insisted that she stay in bed.
Thinking about the events of the afternoon, Candice felt a wave of fear. She lay on the hospital bed, closing her eyes to rest.
After a while, she opened her eyes and looked at Hanley, quietly reminding him. "Hanley, it's late. You should go back to the hotel and rest. Don't you have to meet with clients tomorrow?"
Hanley, who was pouring water, paused and looked at Candice, remaining silent for a moment.
Candice spoke softly. "If I need anything, I can ask the nurse for help. You don't have to worry."
They were just friends, and there was no reason for him to stay overnight. It would not make sense.
Candice pursed her lips, not hearing a response, and pondered her next words.
A glass of water was placed in front of her, and then Hanley's resigned voice sounded. "After dinner, I'll find a caregiver to take care of you and then leave. What are you worried about?"
Candice explained, "Because it's dark outside."
It was the beginning of winter, and the nights were getting darker earlier. It was only 8 o'clock in the evening, but it was already pitch-black outside.
Hanley said, "I'll go buy dinner."
Before he could finish speaking, the door of the ward was pushed open, and Sawyer came in with two meal boxes. He said seriously, "These are the meals ordered by the old man for you. They were sent to the hotel, but Mr. Elysian asked me to bring them to you."
Old Mr. Elysian had not missed a meal when it came to ordering for Candice and Alex.
Before Candice could reply, Sawyer placed the meal boxes down and made an excuse to leave.
Hanley looked at the meal boxes on the coffee table, his expression unchanged as he said, "It looks like I don't need to buy dinner anymore."
Candice nodded. "Let's make do with this then."
However, before they could start eating, Hanley received a call from a client who needed to verify some documents with him urgently.
Candice nodded. "Go ahead and do what you need to."
-
Hanley was too busy and could not get away from work, so he had to find a caregiver to take care of Candice before leaving. NôvelDrama.Org owns this text.
Before leaving, he reminded Candice. "Don't move around unnecessarily, and don't let strangers into the ward."
Candice couldn’t help but ask, "Do you think I'm a kindergartener?"
Hanley looked at her. "If you need anything, call me."
Candice was touched by Hanley's concern, but even if he had not said those things, she would still be careful. She was already aware that someone was plotting against her. It was impossible for her to be unguarded.
With her mind racing, Candice got out of bed to have dinner. She still did not like eating in bed.
As soon as she got out of bed, another person entered.
"You can't sit still. Do I need to have the doctor check if you have ADHD?" A voice laced with impatience came from the door, and Candice looked up to see Alex standing there, looking at her.
She was a little surprised and asked him faintly. "Why are you here again?"
Alex's gaze fell on the meal boxes on the coffee table. "Wasn't it Sawyer who brought the meal boxes?"
Candice understood it then.
The meal boxes were ordered by the old man for both of them, and Alex had come over to have dinner. After all, old Mr. Elysian had Sawyer as his informant.
She nodded as if she did not particularly care, and slowly walked to the side of the coffee table to sit down.
Alex looked at her, as he frowned barely perceptibly, before sitting down next to her. "Where's Hanley?” He asked casually. “Isn't he recognized as one of the top ten good bosses in the industry? Why isn't he here with you?"
Candice glanced at him. "Do you really need to be so sarcastic?"
Alex paused for a moment, then smiled meaningfully. "Me, sarcastic?" He clicked his tongue. "Candice, you really have no conscience."
Candice did not argue with him about whether she had a conscience or not. She ate her meal in silence.
However, she had been frightened today and had little appetite. She put down her chopsticks after eating a little. Alex didn’t seem to be in a good mood either, as he did not eat much.
After he finished eating, Candice was about to ask him to leave, but Alex looked at her and slowly said, "Don't leave the hospital for the next two days."
Candice's eyelids twitched. "Why?"
"Is it hard to understand the words 'stay in bed and rest'?" Alex leaned back on the sofa, squinting at Candice. His faintly noble demeanor made him look relaxed and elegant even in a hospital like this.
Candice stared into his eyes, a slight curve appearing at the corner of her lips. She suddenly asked, "Do you know who was responsible for this afternoon?"
"I don't know."
"Sonia." Candice was straightforward, staring at Alex. "Besides her, I can't think of anyone else who would hate me so much."
A strange emotion flashed in Alex's black eyes, and he said in a deep voice. "Do you have any evidence?"
"Isn't the teapot evidence?" Candice sat on the edge of the bed, her hands trembling slightly on her thighs.
She recalled the sight of the teapot crashing down with lingering fear.
If that teapot had really hit her head, what a horrible sight it would have been. She didn’t even dare to imagine.
However, Alex just looked at her and said calmly, "That's not evidence, just your speculation."
A cold smile appeared on Candice's face. The distance between her and Alex was diagonal, and the bright white light above her head made it difficult for her to see Alex's expression clearly.
She reached out and touched her belly. The child in her belly was almost two months old. Although her lower abdomen was still flat, Candice felt as if she could feel its presence at any moment.
She took a deep breath and said, word by word. "Alex, you just want to protect Sonia. You clearly know everything."
A brief silence filled the hospital room.
Alex looked at her without saying a word. His deep and quiet eyes seemed to be filled with a storm, but it was all hidden behind a thick fog.
Candice stopped looking at him. Her voice was cold. "You can leave now. I don't want to see you." Her expression was calm, her hands clasped tightly on her legs.
It was not until Alex left that Candice's body relaxed.
Not long after Alex left, Yana's rang. She must have just learned from Hanley that Candice was hospitalized, so she called to provide some comfort and to check-in.
Candice managed to keep her energy to say a few words before she hung up on Yana.
But as soon as the call ended, she felt wide awake again, lying on the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling.
There were murmurs of conversation outside the door, although she couldn’t hear anything clearly, Candice felt strangely reassured by the sound.
She closed her eyes and slowly fell asleep.
Oddly, she did not dream at all that night.
It was not until the next morning when the nurse came to check on her that she woke up.
The nurse smiled and said, "Did you sleep well last night? Your husband had a rough time, he sat outside all night. He just left, probably to buy you breakfast."
