Getting into the taxi, Alicia sat in the back seat, hugging the unconscious Melissa.

Edmond was on the phone in the passenger seat, and perhaps he had known someone in the higher-up of another hospital. He managed to arrange everything quickly, and now the hospital awaited Melissa's arrival.

Alicia had not spoken a single word.

She seemed to be in a daze.

Edmond thought for a long while before squeezing out a word of comfort.

"Don't worry. I'll do what I can." Edmond reassured Alicia.

Alicia was silent for a long time before she slowly spoke up.

"I feel so tired," Alicia said.

There was a hint of sarcasm and sadness in her voice.

Edmond did not utter a word.

The driver dared not even breathe and silently prayed that the unconscious elderly lady behind him would not pass away in his car. Otherwise, that would be very unlucky.

Alicia choked back a sob before continuing.

"I'm a very competitive person and have always enjoyed to compete with others since I was young. I don't want to lose, so I've managed to win everything but nothing I have winned... Just now, I suddenly feel so ridiculous, like I'm a fool."

"I don't work here, so they won't let me do the surgery." Edmond apologized.

Alicia tightly grabbed Edmond's hand and replied, "It's fine. You've already done a lot for me."

"Calm yourself down. Don't get too worked up." Edmond comforted her.

She nodded in agreement, but she could not fool anymore with her pale face and trembling hands.

Edmond could only hold Alicia tightly in his arms to make her feel warm and secure as much as possible.

His hands were patting her back slowly like coaxing a little child.

Soon, Alicia calmed down.

Edmond's phone kept ringing, but he waited until Alicia was more emotionally stabilized before taking it out to read the message, and his expression darkened.

It was easy to guess that his Dean had demanded Edmond to go back and help out again.

Alicia's eyes flickered as she told Edmond, "Since my mom is already undergoing surgery, you shouldn't wait here with me. Your hospital might need your help badly, so you should go back and take a look. After all, you're a doctor too."

It was not that Alicia was overly sympathetic to others.

It was just that once she had calmed down, she placed herself in the shoe of a healer and understood that saving lives and helping people was a duty and vocation for all doctors and nurses.

Alicia nodded at him and explained, "It's fine. I can wait here alone. Instead of waiting here with me, you might as well go and do something more meaningful. Don't lose your job because of this, so go now."

She knew that she could not be so selfish.

Plus, she could not let Edmond sacrifice so much for her.

Until Edmond's back had disappeared from her sight, Alicia finally withdrew her gaze, lowered her head, and murmured in a low voice.

"I can do it... even if I'm alone."

She kept on chanting to calm herself down that she could do it.

However, suddenly the sound of the footsteps drew nearer, and stopped beside her before sitting down.

Alicia looked up and saw Edmond holding two portions of bread and bottles of water while telling her calmly, "Eat some food to fill your stomach first."

She was utterly surprised.

"Aren't you going back to the hospital?" Alicia asked in astonishment.

Edmond stared into her eyes for a while before bursting into laughter and explaining it to her.

"Licia, you're the one who needs me the most right now."

It was the most touching moment that had ever happened in Alicia's life.
