Chapter 594
Chapter 594
Nydia felt as if she’d plunged into an icy abyss, a hurricane of cold dread rising from her trembling
chest. Her cheeks, once flushed with embarrassment, now drained of color, her pallor heartbreaking to
behold.
She stared into Mrs. Dempsey’s tear–filled eyes, seeing through the facade of her performance to the
disdain she harbored within.
In the past, Nydia might have turned on her heel and fled to a lonely corner to wallow in self–pity and
tears.
But this time, a reckless courage surged through her, a daring to confront the Dempsey clan head–on.
All she did was love Jason.
Was love a crime? Why should she bow to them?
If she ran now, tail between her legs, wouldn’t she be admitting that Mrs. Dempsey’s words were true?
“Ms. Nydia, did you understand what I’ve said?” Mrs. Dempsey maintained her frail demeanor, yet her
tone was icy.
Jason’s broad shoulders quivered, the veins in his neck bulging as if they might burst, “Why lash out at
me? How can you, as an elder, say such things to the woman I love? What has Nydia done to deserve
this?”
“Jason, how dare you speak to your mother like this! You’re way out of line!” Dave finally lost his
patience and scolded sharply.
This was a first for Dave, feeling both anger and astonishment.
Astonishment that his normally sensible and considerate youngest, for this woman, had turned against
the family!
His wife’s worries seemed justified; such a beautiful girl, adept at manipulating men’s hearts, had
shifted his son’s nature. If she continued to influence him, Jason would sever ties with the family for
good!
Mrs. Dempsey’s eyes blazed with anger as she glared at Nydia, “And what have I done? I merely
shared some womanly insights with Nydia, which you wouldn’t understand. Can you comprehend
them? Ms. Nydia, you are the daughter of Chairman Emeric and Myra. Though not born to the main
wife like Ms. Evadne, you too are his daughter, raised with a fine education, understanding, and
reason. So I believe you grasp my intent. If you truly love Jason, you should let go. You wouldn’t want
him torn between love and family, nor see him live a life devoid of dignity, would you?”
Jason’s head buzzed with rage, his vision blurring at the sight of the woman before him.
Was this the same nurturing mother who raised him?
Such obsessive possessiveness and control, when did her love become so twisted?
Dave’s pupils contracted slightly.
He too thought his wife had gone too far, but without such measures, how would the Dempsey family
save face? How would Jason cleanly break with this girl?
As Jason’s forehead throbbed with anger, Nydia bravely met Mrs. Dempsey’s hostile gaze, her voice
calm and steady, “Mrs. Dempsey, I’m sorry, but I don’t understand your point.”
The Dempseys‘ faces twisted in shock!
Even Jason was stunned, the normally gentle and timid woman standing her ground with unexpected
strength.
“What did you say?” Mrs. Dempsey stiffened, taken aback by the young woman’s boldness.
“Jason and I are truly in love. You pretend to be blind to this, trying to tear us apart. May I ask why?”
Nydia’s eyes reddened as she took a deep breath.
These words had been bottled up too long, and now, with a welter of emotions, she couldn’t hold back,
“Though I love Jason deeply, I never intended to cling to him. Neither I nor my family would ever shame
the Dempseys or be a burden. Moreover, you claim my sister has been using Jason, trampling his
dignity, and that my family looks down on him. This is baseless. If it were true, my parents would never
have approved of our relationship, and my father would not have accepted him as a godson.”
Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey were shocked–godson?
When did this happen, and why had Jason never mentioned it?
Cedric, seething with envy, regretted not forging a connection with the Ashbourne family himself. If only
he had, he might now be living a life of privilege, possibly as the head of K Group’s legal department.
“However, if your disdain stems from my mother being Myra, then I’m sorry for your shallow,
opportunistic views,” Nydia’s gentle gaze turned steely, her tone growing colder, “I cannot change my
origins, nor do I wish to. I’m not ashamed of my mother. Her struggles and sacrifices are something you
will never understand or experience. My mother is my pride. But I will not blame you for your disdain
and mockery, because you are Jason’s mother.”
Mrs. Dempsey’s heart clenched, her cheeks burning with shame as if slapped by Nydia’s words.
“But this should be the last time I hear such words from you.”
Jason watched Nydia’s fearless expression, his heart pounding.
She had always been the quiet one, soft–spoken, like a delicate bunny sheltered in the palm of a hand.
At that moment, Nydia seemed to have suddenly matured, breaking through her own limitations,
radiant and bold, even casting the shadow of a lady of high society. Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
No.
She was simply herself, the Nydia he adored, unlike anyone else.
Dave watched as his wife choked on her words, finding himself speechless.
On one hand, he couldn’t stoop to bickering with a young girl–it was beneath his dignity; on the other
hand, his wife’s sharp tongue had indeed gone too far. Who wouldn’t snap back at her?
Mrs. Dempsey was taken aback, her lips trembling, her mental gears grinding to a halt, her
authoritative air dissipating.
“Ms. Nydia, the way you speak, it’s as if we, the Dempsey family, can’t recognize true worth, as if we’re
all villains.”
Cedric was like a fan fanning the flames, how could he resist adding fuel to the fire?
With a sneer, he thrust a verbal dagger into Nydia’s wounds, “My mother is sick in bed, having just
narrowly escaped death, and here I thought you came to visit. Instead, you’ve come to vent your anger.
We, the Dempsey family, might not compare to the Ashbournes, we may be of modest means, but we
come from a lineage of integrity. We wouldn’t just let any girl with a questionable past into our home.
That’s fair, isn’t it?”
“Who are you talking about?” Jason’s fists clenched in anger, no longer interested in words. He wanted
to wring Cedric’s neck!
“Your past with Byron, don’t think just because he’s gone that everyone has forgotten. You say you
were forced, but who really knows the truth?”
Nydia staggered backwards in pain, as if struck at her very core.
Cedric’s actions were despicable, mercilessly reopening her deepest wound.
The unbearable memories from that night flooded back, suffocating her with their pain.
“Ms. Nydia, a lady of wealth, and the decades–long friendship between the Ashbourne and Chambers
families are well known throughout Skyrim. Byron forced you? He wouldn’t dare.”
Cedric turned the hospital room into a courtroom, seemingly forgetting his own downfall, “A scandal
breaks out after you two were alone together at a party, and your family, the Ashbournes, throw the dirt
onto the Chambers family. You knew your reputation was tarnished, and it would be harder to find
someone of high society to accept you. So, you set your sights lower, using Jason as a fallback,
playing him for a fool. Ms. Nydia, you’re quite the strategist, nearly matching your sister Evadne in
cunning.”
“Beast!”
Jason, consumed by rage, his eyes bloodshot, swung his fist hard at Cedric’s face, twisting his features
with the impact!
Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey screamed in shock, “Jason! Stop!”
“Ugh-” Cedric saw stars as his recently diagnosed concussion throbbed with fresh agony.
The next second, he tasted blood in his mouth and spat it onto the floor, hearing a chilling sound-
A tooth tumbled out of his mouth!
It was clear how much force Jason had put into that punch; he was ready to kill.
Nydia covered her mouth in horror, realizing Jason was now completely driven by fury. Although he
was defending her, this would only lead to more trouble.
As Jason was about to throw another punch, Mrs. Dempsey suddenly lunged at him, clutching his arm
and sobbing hysterically, “You dare lay hands on your own brother for this woman, you’ve completely
lost your mind! Hit me! Go on, hit me! Kill me! It seems you don’t need a mother anymore!”
Jason, gasping for air, his eyes brimming with tears of rage and sorrow.
Why was it so hard to love someone?
Why did they scorn Nydia, such a wonderful girl, looking down on her through tainted glasses, hurting
her over and over again!
“Enough is enough! Ganging up on a young lady together, when did the Dempsey family become so
disgraceful?”
In the tense air, a voice full of indignation pierced through.
Cedric, holding his face, glanced coldly over, and Mrs. Dempsey couldn’t help but stop her crying.
Ivan, with a frosty expression, strode into the room, his footsteps shattering the awkward silence.
“Ivan.” Jason murmured hoarsely as he looked up at Ivan.
Ivan gave his brother a meaningful look and then turned to Nydia, who was pale with distress. His heart
was filled with both sorrow and guilt.
He had been standing outside the door for a while, already aware of everything that had transpired in
the room.
“Mother, how long will you continue to be so blind?” Ivan shook his head in disappointment, “If what you
call ‘wanting the best for your children‘ means tearing apart their happiness, means hurting the one
they love. Then your maternal love is truly disappointing!”
