Crash Into Me

Twenty Five

He couldn’t sleep that night. Thinking of ways not to fuck up this thing he had with Sandy. She said she wanted a break. She said it, she thought it was pointless. She was not the first to be frightened of the reality of his celebrity status. He could never understand how women think, they always seemed to find something wrong even though everything was going good. But it was different with Sandy, he would’ve left it as it was with anyone else. She’s the only one he ever asked to come back with him, the only one he would consider changing his life for, and probably the only one who said ‘no’ to that. She was the one. God forbid after all these times he’d been looking for her that it should end being ‘the one that got away’. She shut him down, just like that. Just the way she left Manta for three days. She played every string in his heart, she spoke his language. His demons sat well with hers. When they were together, there was never a moment when he doubted she was the one he wanted to spend his days with. When they made love, it felt like their bodies were made as a pair. He was always hungry for her, and she was right, he was insatiable … of her, and she quenched his thirst every time. He knocked on her door in the morning, no answer, he used his key to open the door, called out to her, no answer. He couldn’t stand leaving things the way it was the night before. He wanted to make sure that everything was alright before he started his day. He went to her room, but she wasn’t there. She left early, she probably had done it on purpose. She was trying to push him away. He left the cottage with a bitter after taste of an unresolved first fight they ever had. Hoping she will come around later in the day and realized how foolish their fight was. She said she needed time to think, he should give that to her. He did what he does best, showed up to work, and gave it his full attention. At the end of the day, he checked his phone, she never called or texted. He went back to the cottage, prepared this time. He might find her sobbing on the couch and start another round of last night’s unfinished match. Her lights were off, his heart started to race. It was close to 1 AM, had she been out all day? He called her phone, threw all his pride out the window. She didn’t answer. He took a shower, thinking of the right words to text her. He couldn’t find any. He called her cell again, still nothing. He paced up and down his room. John : Andrea? Sorry to bother you so late … is Sandy with you?

Andrea: John? … she was this morning … the whole day, actually, she left about six … she said she was going to have dinner

John : By herself?

Andrea: Yeah, I couldn’t go because I had a date … why? Is she not back yet?

John : No … her lights are off, she wasn’t there, I checked

Andrea: (Thinking) … she was in a pretty bad shape this morning, I mean … I don’t know if I’m suppose to tell you this, John, but … she wasn’t in a good place

John : Should we be worried? I mean … it’s really late … she’s alone and … (sighs)

Andrea: (Long exhale) … she usually goes out for drinks when she’s like that, but I don’t want to speculate … I’m getting worried too

John : By herself? But how would she get home?Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.

Andrea: (Hesitant) … she’s been taking care of herself for so long sometimes she disregards her own safety … but she’s always responsible, John … she was in a pretty bad shape though … oh God now I’m really worried

John : Did she say anything to you? Where was she going to have dinner? Anything at all?

Andrea: No … she said she was done for the day … she was going to grab something to eat, I assumed she went straight home after that

John : Wait … my phone is beeping … there’s another call … it’s her

Andrea: Oh Thank God!

John : Okay, thanks anyway, Andrea … sorry to bother you, talk to you later

Andrea: Goodnight John, I hope you guys work it out

John : Thanks He was relieved to see her name flashed on his phone. It was close to 3 AM, he quickly accepted the call. John : Sandy? Where are you?

Sandy: John? It’s Lucas … I think you need to come and get her … she’s in La Lune
