Chapter 142

Kira

I finally worked up the courage to leave my room, my stomach growling with hunger. I had been hiding out for what felt like an eternity, trying to avoid Brax and Aston. But as I made my way to the kitchen, I overheard the maids chatting in hushed

Tones.

…now that Aston’s gone, there’s less work to do around here,” one of them said.

My ears perked up at the mention of Aston’s name. Gone? What did they mean? I felt a pang of curiosity and concern. Where had he gone? And why? I wanted to approach the maids but I reminded myself that I didn’t give a s**t that Aston was

gone.

I continued on to the kitchen, my mind reeling with stupid thoughts. As I entered, I saw Brax sitting at the table, sipping at cup of coffee. He looked up at me, his eyes piercing.

Great, just the man I was trying to avoid.

“Hey,” he said, his voice neutral.

I nodded, trying to avoid eye contact. “Hey.”

A maid greeted me warmly. “Kird I’m so glad you’re out of your room! I was worried about you. Let me make you some breakfast. She looked new and her concern looked fake as well but I didn’t want to be a b***h,

“That sounds great.” I answered.

As the new girl busied herself in the kitchen, Brax turned to me. “So, Kira, what’s going on? You’ve been hiding out in your room for days.”

I shrugged, trying to downplay the situation. “I just needed some time to myself, that’s all.”

Brax raised an eyebrow. “You’re not still upset about what I said, are you?” He asked and I wanted no more than to just drop dead.

I felt my face burn with embarrassment as Brax brought it up again. Couldn’t he see I was trying to avoid him? And now, he was making a spectacle out of my rejection. I thought we had a connection, but I guess I was wrong.

“Brax, can we talk about this later?” I asked, trying to keep my voice down, but he just chuckled and continued.

“I’m just saying, Kira, you’re not still upset about me not wanting to marry you, are you?” He said it so casually, as if he was asking about the weather.

The maids were listening, their eyes wide with interest. I knew I had to get out of there before they started laughing. I could already imagine the whispers and snickers behind my back.

“I’m not hungry anymore,” I said, trying to push my chair back and make a quick escape.

But then I remembered I was starving. And I wasn’t going to be able to leave my room for a while after this. So, I did the only thing I could think of- I started grabbing everything edible I could find in the cupboard and hauling it onto a tray.

“Kira, what are you doing?” Brax asked, amusement in his voice, as if he found my situation entertaining.

I didn’t answer. I just kept piling food onto the tray-sandwiches, fruit, cookies, anything I could find. I didn’t care if it looked ridiculous, I just wanted to get out of there.

“Kira, seriously, can you eat all that?” Brax asked, chuckling, and the maids giggled along with him.

My face burned even more. I felt like I was on display, like a zoo animal.

“Let me help you with that, the new maid said, trying to take the tray from me, but I held tight.

“No, I’ve got it.” I said, my voice firm, trying to assert some semblance of control over the situation.

As I turned to leave, Brax called out, “Hey, Kira?”

I didn’t respond. I just kept walking, the tray of food clutched tightly in my hands, trying to escape the embarrassment and humiliation.

“Kira, don’t be like that,” Brax said, his voice following me out of the kitchen, but I didn’t look back.

I stood alone in the hallway, the tray of snacks trembling in my hands as I struggled to hold back tears. I had expected Brax to come after me, to apologize for his thoughtless words, but the hallway was empty. The silence was deafening if you set aside the sound of my own ragged breathing.

I couldn’t understand why Brax was acting this way. He had always been kind and considerate, never one to intentionally hurt someone’s feelings. But now, it seemed like he was going out of his way to be cruel.

I thought back to our conversations, trying to pinpoint what had changed. Had I said something to offend him? Had I done something wrong? But no matter how hard I thought, I couldn’t come up with anything.

As I stood there, trying to make sense of it all, I realized that Brax wasn’t going to come after me. He wasn’t going to apologize or explain himself. I was finally alone and I had to accept that.

Hook a deep breath and continued down the hallway, the tray of snacks still clutched in my hands. I couldn’t let Brax’s behaviour dictate my actions. I had to move on, no matter how hard it was. It was not like he was the love of my life or anything.

I entered my room, closing the door behind me and leaning against it, trying to hold back tears. I felt like I was losing myself. Like I was slowly fading away.

I cried myself to sleep again for the hundredth time this week.

As I woke up from my slumber, the evening sun’s warm rays peeked through my window, casting a golden glow on my room. I stretched my arms and yawned, feeling a bit more refreshed after my nap.

I decided to take a walk in the garden to clear my mind and shake off the gloomy feelings. I rummaged through my closet, searching for something warm to wear. My hands brushed against a soft, thick sweater, and I pulled it out, liking how cozy it made me feel.

“Ah, perfect,” I said to myself, slipping it over my head. I couldn’t afford catching a cold right now. Not when my life was falling apart.

As I opened my window, the wind greeted me with a gentle slap, tousling my hair. I laughed, feeling the cool breeze on my

face.

“Time for a walk,” I said to myself, closing the window behind me.

The garden was serene, with only the sound of crickets and rustling leaves breaking the silence. I strolled along the winding path, taking in the sweet scent of blooming flowers

The sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the garden. I found a bench and sat down, watching the stars begin to twinkle in the night sky

“Maybe tomorrow will be better,” I said to myself, feeling a glimmer of hope.

As I sat on the bench, sipping my tea and nibbling on cookies, I started to feel a sense of unease. At first, I thought it was just

my imagination, but then heard it again – hushed whispering. My heart began to race as I realized that the whispers were coming from behind the same bushes where I had been abducted a few months ago.

1 felt a chill run down my spine as memories of that terrifying night came flooding back. I had been walking in the garden, enjoying the peace and quiet looking forward to a picnic with Brix when a group of men emerged from the shadows and grabbed me. They had dragged me away, and I was only able to escape with the help of Aston, whom I didn’t think had any interest in keeping me alive anymore.

Now, as I sat on the bench, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that it was happening all over again. The whispering grew louder, and I could tell that whoever was making the noise was trying to be quiet, but not quiet enough.

My mind racing. I quickly got up from the bench and started to walk away, but my legs felt like lead.Belonging © NôvelDram/a.Org.

I waited behind a wall to catch my breath. As I stood there, I couldn’t help but think about how vulnerable 1 was. I had no one to save me, no one to protect me. I was alone, and that thought was terrifying.

Slowly, I peeked around the wall, looking to see if the coast was clear. The garden was empty, and I breathed a sigh of relief. I realized that I had to be more careful, that I couldn’t let my guard down, not even in the palace. Especially the palace.

As I stood there, trying to calm my racing heart, I saw a shadow approaching. My body went cold, and I froze, trying not to
