Chapter 12 The Scum Returned
Blanche leaned in and saw Eric browsing through pictures of jewelry.
"Are you buying jewelry as a gift?"
Eric looked up and nodded. "Yeah, don't you know? It's my grandmother's birthday banquet in three days, and I'm preparing a gift for her. Let me tell you, every year, my grandmother likes the gift my cousin sends the most. Hmph, this year I have to come up with something unique and make my grandmother like my gift the most."
Blanche's interest instantly rose, her eyes shining.
For the banquet of Old Mrs. Herbart, all the members of the Herbart family would attend.
Henry, the son of Louis' uncle, would also be present. This would be her chance to make a connection with them and possibly secure her grandmother's surgery.
Eric rubbed his chin, thinking of something. He looked at Blanche with interest.
"Blanche, what gift did your cousin prepare? You know I'm good to you. If it weren't for me, you'd still be starving now. You should show some appreciation."
Blanche shook her head. "I don't know."
She had only just found out about her grandmother's birthday herself, so she had no idea what gift Louis had prepared.
Eric was momentarily stunned, his thoughts stifled and disappointment etched on his face.
"But I can help you choose a gift that your grandmother will like, and you can steal the spotlight from your cousin."
Eric didn't believe her and continued to browse through his phone. "Come on! You haven't even met my grandmother. How can you know what she likes?"
Blanche did not meekly accept his words.
"Hmph, don't underestimate me. Your grandmother must have grown tired of these jewelry pieces you're showing me now. She has probably seen all the precious gems and stones there are. We should focus on heartfelt gifts rather than high-end ones."
Eric's thoughts were interrupted by her words, and he had been thinking about this for a while, which was why he had been browsing for so long without selecting a piece of jewelry.
"Okay, tell me what your grandmother likes the most, and I'll design a piece of jewelry for her. That way, she will definitely like it."
Eric was rendered speechless.
"Will you help me design it? Weren't you just saying that you're not a jewelry designer and that those drawings were just for fun?"
Blanche's face reddened as she chuckled and waved her hand. Her previous denial of being a jewelry designer was only to keep the Herbart family at arm's length, but now that the grandmother's birthday was looming, she couldn't refuse the request.
"I did say I wasn't a designer earlier, but that was just because I didn't trust you and didn't want to reveal too much about myself. I can design jewelry, don't worry. However, I do have one condition for helping you."
Although Eric was not an expert in the field, he could tell that the sketches she had shown him earlier were very professional. It was hard to believe that someone could draw something so good without any experience.
"Fine, I trust you, Blanche. I remember that she likes magnolia flowers the most. What's your condition?"
"Okay, Magnolia flowers, I'll remember that. My condition is that you must find a way for me to attend the birthday banquet of your grandmother."
A car's engine could be heard outside in the yard.
Blanche frowned. It must be Louis returning. She had to go back to her room quickly. If she didn't confess to her mistake and continued to eat her meal, Louis might be furious with her if he found out.
"The scum is back. I'm going upstairs first."
Blanche hurried up the stairs. Eric stared at her disappearing back and stayed there for a couple of seconds.
As expected, Louis came in as soon as Blanche went upstairs.
Louis held his car keys between his fingers and walked towards the living room. "What are you doing here?"
Eric lazily leaned back on the sofa. "Just here to see my sister-in-law. You secretly got married and didn't even notify us. Did you have to keep it a secret from everyone in the Herbart family?"
Louis loosened his tie and looked upstairs. "Did you see her?"
"No, the maid said that my sister-in-law is too ugly, and you're afraid she'll embarrass you if she comes out, so you locked her up and starved her. I don't even have a key to your house, so how could I see her?"
A sharp glare swept over Eric, and Louis' face turned colder. "Which maid said that?"
The passing maid stumbled and her heart skipped a beat.
"Come on. It's just a joke. But speaking of which, is my sister-in-law really the ugliest woman in Cloud City? Would you mind summoning her so that I may behold her true ugliness? You have no idea how curious I am. With the most handsome man in our family paired with the ugliest woman in Cloud City, we would be making a significant contribution to society." "I cannot expect a dog's mouth to utter ivory." Louis sat down nearby as he thought.
"What sort of contribution?" He asked.
"In the future, your children won't be too ugly. Your handsome genes are strong enough to balance out her ugliness a bit. If my sister-in-law, who is so ugly, were to have a child with an ugly man, the child would most likely be unbearable to look at. Your contribution is significant."
Louis' face instantly turned gravely cold. "Get out."
Eric sensed a barrage of hostile glares directed towards him, as if they were trying to shred him to pieces.
"Just joking. If my sister-in-law doesn't appear today, I won't force it. But at Grandma's birthday banquet, I will definitely see her."
With those words, Eric left in disappointment.
