Chapter 29 Is Money All You Care about?
Edison returned to the Moonlight Villa with Gwenyth.
Edison walked quietly on a tree-lined path in the villa community, with Gwenyth following.
He walked very slowly, listening to Gwenyth's footsteps. It seemed that he went back to several years ago when he was in college and Gwenyth was in high school...
At that time, Gwenyth and her family moved away suddenly. Edison kept finding her for a long time.
The first year after Gwenyth's leave, she seemed to have disappeared from the world. She was nowhere to be found, and there was no news about her.
That period was very tough for Edison.
Gwenyth left without saying goodbye. To Edison, it was like they had made love, but Gwenyth refused to admit it the next day and even disappeared.
Thinking of this, Edison gritted his teeth. His face contorted with anger.
He stopped and turned to look at Gwenyth.
Gwenyth lowered her head and was deep in thinking. Thus, she didn't even notice that Edison had stopped and just bumped her head against his chest.
Edison stood still while Gwenyth was knocked back two steps.
"Why are you absent-minded in broad daylight?"
Edison said with displeasure.
Gwenyth rubbed her forehead and muttered softly, "I'm not absent-minded."
She just thought of many things in her school days.
Edison was young and naive at that time, but now he had strong handsome features and a tall figure. Gwenyth could only reach his chest in height.
Gwenyth had to lift her head to look at Edison.
Maybe it was because of Edison's height, he appeared superior and arrogant when he looked at Gwenyth.
"Why did you stop?"
"I have something to ask you."
Edison became serious.
He put one hand in his trouser pocket. His upright posture made him casual and languid, which was in stark contrast to the serious expression on his face.
"What do you want to ask?"
"If I terminate the contract and ask you to sincerely date me, will you agree?"
Gwenyth was stunned for a while and calmed down.
"No."
Her mother had taught her a lesson. She would not be trapped in her relationship with Edison. She had a different family background from Edison, and they would not have a happy ending.
What's more, Edison's grandfather Ismael preferred Nancy to be his granddaughter-in-law.
"Do you want to terminate the contract?"
She looked into Edison's beautiful eyes and said word by word, "If so, you should pay me four hundred thousand dollars. Do you remember?"
Edison was angry, and his eyes flashed with coldness.
"Is money all you care about?"
"I signed the contract with you because of money. I hope Mr. Yates will not want to develop a romantic relationship with me just because of one-night stand. I'm not interested in you."
Edison smiled with self-deprecation.
He thought, 'I might have been crazy.'
'Gwenyth had sex with me four years ago and left without saying goodbye. Yet I still want to date her sincerely. Isn't it ridiculous?'
"Miss Lovelace, don't get me wrong. What I said just now doesn't mean anything else. It's good that you're not interested in me. After all, I am too good for you."
With an indifferent expression, Edison turned around and strode forward.
He had long legs and walked fast and hurriedly.
Gwenyth trotted all the way and barely managed to catch up with him.
After entering the villa, Gwenyth only saw Edison going upstairs.
Then the door swung shut with a bang.
Gwenyth froze in the living room and was at a loss.
Ismael heard the noise and walked out of the dining room slowly on crutches.
Gwenyth stepped forward to help him but was stopped by Ismael's cold stare.
Ismael was not friendly. He thought Gwenyth was good at seducing men.
He lowered his voice and warned, "Get out. Don't be an eyesore."
After saying that, he sat on the sofa and waited for Nancy.
Gwenyth was full of anger and cleaned up the dishes in the dining room.
Nancy came back not long after. Seeing Gwenyth washing dishes in the kitchen like a nanny, she was pleased. She smiled at Ismael and said, "Grandpa, I'll take you back. I still have work later."
Ismael liked Nancy very much. "Okay."
In Edison's study on the second floor...
Edison stood in front of the window and saw Nancy supporting Ismael into the courtyard and helping him into the car.
The phone in his pocket suddenly rang. He took out his phone and found the caller ID was Andy.
"Mr. Yates, I found the owner of the black car last night."
Edison frowned and asked impatiently, "Who is the owner?"
"Luna Engles, the eldest daughter of the Engles."
Edison hadn't heard of this name. But he met Luna's father Martin Engles at Ismael's 80th birthday banquet.
Martin was a polite and shrewd middle-aged businessman and was said to have a son and a daughter. Edison only saw Martin once, not to speak of having an acquaintance and a friendship with him.
Last night, Luna drove a car to follow Gwenyth and even dared to blatantly hit her in the street. Edison wondered if there was any hatred between them. Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
"Mr. Yates, do you want a further investigation?"
Edison was silent for a moment. He refused and then hung up the phone quickly.
Because of Gwenyth’s bad attitude, he didn’t want to follow up on what had happened last night.
Whoever Gwenyth had offended had nothing to do with him.
Edison threw his mobile phone on the desk and sat down in a leather chair. He rubbed his forehead with his right hand, and Gwenyth's words echoed in his ears, "I signed the contract with you because of money. I hope Mr. Yates won't date me just because we had sex once. I'm not interested in you."
Gwenyth said she was not interested in Edison.
But in the past, it was Gwenyth who had confessed her love to Edison.
Edison thought, 'She won my heart and now told me she's not interested in me?'
Edison clenched his fist and struck hard on the desk.
With a thud, ornaments on the desk wobbled.
He didn't want to think of Gwenyth.
Otherwise, his head would hurt.
He leaned back in his chair and tried to relax. But as soon as he closed his eyes, he thought of four years ago when Gwenyth had sat with him by the pool and whispered nervously, "Mr. Yates, I like you very much."
It was Gwenyth's birthday on that day. Edison had prepared a gift and planned to confess his love.
Unexpectedly, Gwenyth first declared her love for Edison.
Nobody knew how happy Edison was at that time.
Edison was drunk and unable to resist the impulse to kiss Gwenyth.
Thinking of how innocent and joyful he had been, Edison opened his eyes and felt very annoyed. He frowned and kicked over the desk in front of him.
The loud noise startled Gwenyth.
She stood outside the study and knocked on the door.
"What's the matter? Did you fall?"
"Edison!"
Gwenyth beat at the door for a while, but no one answered.
She thought something bad had happened to Edison and anxiously pushed the door open.
Then she saw Edison sitting on the chair with a sullen face. The desk in front of him toppled, and the documents, ornaments, and antique lamp all fell to the ground. The study was a mess with lots of things broken.
