Chapter 23 A Narrow Escape
Chapter 23 A Narrow Escape
Jane came out of the club and stopped the taxi on the roadside. After getting on the car, she breathed
a long sigh of relief.
She had been in a cold sweat for the last few moments.
She almost had an accident.
Thanks to Jeffery's sudden phone call, she suddenly thought of this excuse and scared Larry.
It was already noon when she got back to the office, and her colleagues were ready to go out for dinner
in twos and threes. They all nodded politely when they saw Jane.
When she returned to the office, Tina, from the secretary's department had not left yet. When she saw
her return, she had a gloating expression on her face. "Where did you go? Come in, the CEO is looking
for you."
Jane froze for a moment.
Looking for me?
Thinking of the life saving call she had missed at the club, Jane guessed that he called her for that.
She pushed open the office door and saw Jeffery sitting in a soft leather chair with his back to the door.
It seemed that he had been waiting for her for a long time.
"Jeffery, are you looking for me?" She approached him and stopped at his desk.
Jeffery turned around and wore a cold face, looking terribly serious.
After a while, he stopped reading the documents in his hand and said, "As my personal secretary, you
leave the office at your will the next day of your work. How should I punish you?"
"Sorry, I won't do it next time." Jane was shocked by Jeffery's expression. She lowered her head and
admitted her mistake.
Jeffery didn't say a word. He stood up and walked to Jane.
As soon as he approached her, he smelled the slight scent of alcohol on her body and could not help
frowning.
"Did you drink?"
"I......" She wanted to say something, but he suddenly reached out and pulled Jane over and pressed
her on the desk.
Jane was caught off guard and almost fell down. She leaned her waist against the edge of the table
and looked up at Jeffery, who was warpping her in his arms.
Jeffery's face slowly got closer and stopped when he was one finger away from Jane. "Who are you
with? I don't remember that I arranged you to do the work of meeting customers."
Jane hesitated.
Her mind told her to tell him what had happened and let him teach Larry a lesson, but she felt like she
owed him a lot already. Besides, she was already out, and nothing happened, and she didn't want to
bother him anymore.
She shrank back and did not dare to look directly into Jeffery's eyes. She whispered, "I took it wrong. I
took the wine... and took the wine as water."
Her explanation was not clever at all. Alcohol and water tasted differently. No one would get it wrong.
Jeffery obviously didn't believe it.
He looked at her eyes and did not intend to stop. Jane was so guilty of his observation that she could
hardly resist.
"Knock knock knock..."
A knocking sound came from time to time and saved her life.
Jeffery frowned with displeasure.
As if seeing a savior, Jane escaped from Jeffery's arms without him noticing.
Jeffery didn't want to stop her, so he said to the outside.
Following which, the office door was pushed open. It turned out to be Susie.
"Jeffery..."
When Susie saw that Jane was also here, her face was instantly filled with anger. "I have something to
say to my cousin. You go out."
Seeing her aggressive attitude, Jane thought that there was no good thing and she didn't want to stay
here as a cannon fodder.
Just as she was about to leave, Jeffery's words made her back. "Stay here. If you have anything to say,
just say it face to face. We're not outsiders anyway."
Hearing that, Jane didn't say anything. She couldn't decide whether she should leave or stay. She
wanted to say that she'd better go out. But when she met Jeffery's eyes, she held back her words.
Susie's face was distorted.
She couldn't believe her ears. Jeffery was partial to this b*tch many times. Now she even participate in
their family conversation.
She glances at Jane, walked up to Jeffery and glanced at her out of the corner of her eye. "Why isn't
she an outsider? Cousin, after all, we're a family. I wouldn't harm you, but she is different. '' ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
Jeffery remained unmoved. His face turned colder, and the way he looked at her grew more
displeased.
Susie felt that he was going to be angry, so his momentum suddenly weakened.
Seeing that Jane's daughter could not leave, she just snorted and said, "Well, since you want to hear it,
I'll say it in front of everyone, lest someone gossips behind me."
Susie took out her mobile phone and showed a screenshot of a text message to Jeffery. "I have said
that this woman is a whore. She would not let go of anyone as long as it is a man. Don't be fooled by
her."
Jeffery took a look at it and handed it to Jane. The text message was very ambiguous and the words
were even more coy. The sender was Jane, and the receiver was Larry.
Jane looked at the time and it was noon.
She recalled that time when she left in a hurry, she left her phone in the clubhouse. Undoubtedly, this
text message was sent by Larry deliberately to defame her.
Only Susie would believe such an inferior trick. She took Larry as a precious man. Jane looked down
on her, but was also afraid that Jeffery would believe it.
She looked up and saw Jeffery's eyes. He seemed to be asking her whether it was true.
Jane didn't know how to answer. After hesitating for a long time, she suddenly asked, "Do you believe
it?"
She didn't know whether it was because Jane's words were too funny, Susie laughed out loud and
looked at her with a sarcastic expression. She pointed to the contents on her mobile phone and
scolded, "Now the witness and material evidence are all here. The message was sent by you by your
phone. How could you..."
"I believe whatever you say." Before Susie could finish, Jeffery interrupted her and looked at Jane
firmly, "I believe whatever you say, but don't lie to me."
"I didn't lie to you. I didn't send it. I lost my cell phone. It was not on me." Jane felt a little happy. Jeffery
stood on her side, and made her suddenly feel that there was a pair of hands behind protecting her.
Susie simply couldn't believe her ears. When she received screenshots sent by Larry at noon, she was
already furious. Furthermore, Larry had said that Jane didn't want to go over and get drunk in the
afternoon shift. She wanted to rekindle her old love, Sussie was filled with anger.
"This woman told Larry that she still likes my husband and wants to make peace with him. She even
wants us to work together to break down the company and seek for personal gains. Cousin, if you trust
her that much, won't you trust your brother-in-law?"
"I know what kind of person she is. You'd better figure it out first what is your man like." Jeffery
obviously did not want to listen anymore. Losing his patience, he pulled Jane out of the office, leaving
Susie who was furious.
