Chapter 110

Chapter 110

“Hey,” Ethan called out, his gaze fixed on Axel as he emerged from the toilet for the third time that day.

Concern etched his features as he approached.

“You okay?” Ethan inquired, a note of genuine worry in his voice. Axel wearily slumped into a seat, his

discomfort evident.

“Yes,” Axel replied, exhaling with a sigh. “Just feel a bit bloated,” he confessed, the aftermath of

Jasmine’s br ownies taking a toll on him. Despite the digestive distress, Axel found himself unable to

complain. If he was presented with those bro wnies once more, he knew he would still indulge without

hesitation.

The car ride to work that morning with Jasmine carried a lingering awkwardness due the way he had

left her house the previous night. Fortunately, she made no comments about how he left. She didn’t say

a word.

He felt bad, she had invested time and effort, spending hours cooking for him, and he had left in such a

manner.

He sighed.

The absence of a wolf was a sensitive topic for him but what had truly scared him shitless however,

was the unexpected happiness he felt last night he felt happy and contended for the first time in a long

time. It had been so long it felt strange.

Jasmine’s thoughtful gestures, from waiting for him to cooking and sharing dinner, created a moment of

genuine happiness. In that instance, he had been so happy and entertained by her tales, he laughed,

and an even rarer thing happened, his eyes glowed.

“Do I deserve to feel this happy?” he wondered, the question lingering in his mind.

A resounding “No.” Echoed from the back of his thoughts. He didn’t deserve to be happy, not after what

he had done.

He had shattered his family, transforming his once-loving father into something unrecognizable due to

the mistakes he had made. He believed he deserved to be alone, accepting his solitude, but then

suddenly, Jasmine entered his life like a sledgehammer, breaking through his barriers with her wide

eyes, innocence, and disarming smile. He found himself rapidly losing control to her charm.

His hunting echo of his father’s harsh words reverberated in his ears: “Are you hurt? Good. You

deserve to feel hurt and pain. For the rest of your life, you should live miserably.”

That night, he was sitting on the floor amidst broken glasses, a young child at the time. Many years had

passed, but the memory lingered without fading. He felt he had no right to experience happiness. He

couldn’t afford to become entangled with someone or lose himself. With that thought in mind, he

decisively grabbed his phone. Though he couldn’t admit it, he was falling rapidly for her. It seemed best

to put a stop to it.

After the first ring, she eagerly picked up.

“Hey.” Jasmine’s voice, usually vibrant, carried a hint of excitement. She always sounded genuinely

happy to hear from him.

He struggled to find the right words.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t take you to work and back anymore.” He finally mustered the courage to say.

“Oh, okay. Are you working late?” She asked lightly.

“No.” He replied.

“Traveling?” She probed again.

“No.” He responded. The conversation turned into single-word exchanges.

Jasmine’s smile evaporated instantly.

“Is everything alright?” She inquired, concern evident in her voice.

“Yes,” Another brief reply.,

“Did I do something?” She asked quietly, her voice trembling lightly.

“No.” Another short response. Jasmine felt the distance growing, and disappointment settled in.

‘We’ve gone past this,’ she thought inwardly. “We’re back to one-word answers?” She couldn’t help but

ask. “It would be best we went back to how things were,” he stated.

“What do you mean?” She whispered.

Silence lingered on his end, delivering an unspoken message which she understood.

“I understand,” she said slowly, sensing there was more to this. Axel was purposely putting up barriers

and walls between them. Walls she’d tried really hard to break, he’d erected them once more.

“Why do you always do this, Axel?’ she wanted to ask. Just last night, it felt like they were getting

closer until he left abruptly.

“Thank you for all the rides those days, Axel.” She expressed gratitude, her voice tinged with a hint of

melancholy.

The line went dead as he hung up, leaving her with a pang in her chest.

“It’s just car rides, why are you so upset?” She questioned herself, attempting to laugh off the pain. Yet,

it felt like she had just received a break-up message.

‘Cause you won’t be seeing him again.

They lived in the same building, yes, but it wouldn’t be the same. Just car rides? It was more than just

car rides.

Sitting in the car with him every day had become a comforting routine she had grown accustomed to,

one she would undoubtedly miss. Axel’s quiet, reassuring scent enveloping her, and his protective

presence making her feel secure.

Those short conversations they had held a depth she cherished, and those quiet evening rides spent.

together, she seated in his car with his puppy in her arms, created a sense of warmth.

Then those unexpected stops at the store, moments that felt like sudden dates. And the times he lent

her his jacket whenever it became cold, it was twice her size and she would nestle into it enwrapped in

his scent and loving every moment of it. As she thought about it, her eyes welled up with tears.

They were making progress. Despite Axel’s seemingly cold exterior and numerous barriers, they were

gradually spending more time together he became a lot warmer person. What had changed now?

She had alot of questions and she felt badly hurt, but she would respect his decision. He didn’t want

her around. She couldn’t help but smile sadly. It seemed like nob*dy ever wanted her and now Axel had

joined the ranks of those pushing her away.

After completing her pile of work, Jasmine finally left the company building. A stranger approached,

calling out to her.

“Miss Jasmine,” he said as he walked toward her.

“Yes?” She turned to face him.

“Mr. Axel sent me to come get you,” the man explained.

“What?”

“I was sent to give you a ride home.” He explained.

“There’ll be no need for that,” she replied, feeling a twinge of annoyance. Why was he sending

someone to fetch her after clearly pushing her away? It felt like she was being treated as if she needed

charity.

“I don’t need his help; I’ll be fine,” she muttered, then began walking away.

“I can get rides myself,” she added under her breath.

“Moving back to the pack house?” Ethan asked, his voice raised in surprise.

“Why? I don’t think you should; the place where you are now is what’s best for you” Ethan said, his

honesty carrying a weight of concern. “I mean, you were becoming happy,” he stated.

“I was becoming happy,” Axel repeated with a touch of bitterness.

“But I don’t deserve it,” he added, the shadow of his past casting a gloom over his recent moments of

contentment.

Ethan sighed understanding Axel.

“What happened that day wasn’t your fault, Axel. You were a child,” Ethan whispered, trying to break

through the heavy guilt Axel still carried. NôvelDrama.Org holds © this.

“I caused the death of two people, my sister and my mother. How isn’t it my fault?” Axel whispered

back, his voice laden with the burden of remorse. “I don’t deserve any kind of happiness,” he added,

the weight of self-condemnation evident in every word.

“You never actually got to forgive yourself,” Ethan stated.

Axel only looked away.

“Have someone help me clean the place up, would you?” Axel asked, abruptly changing the subject

then walking away.

At the age of nine, fueled by childish tantrums, he ran away from home. Little did he know that this

impulsive act would unravel a tragic fate. His frantic mother, overwhelmed with worry, had embarked on

a search with his older sister. They drove out through the rain soaked and almost flooded streets.

There was am accident and they both died.

Someone had found him and taken him back home. There the news was broken to him, his mother and

sister were dead.

The worse part of it, he never knew they had been on their way to find him when it happened.

The aftermath of the accident left a drastic change on his father. The man who was a loving father

became a hopeless drunk that couldn’t stand the sight of his younger child. The death of his wife an

daughter pushing him to the brink of madness.

His father was cold to and abused him.

For years, Axel had grappled with the torment of his father’s relentless abuse, unable to understand

why he was subjected to such cruelty. But with all of that, he tried to live a semblance of a normal life,

attempting to become happy as he imagined his mother would have wanted. She wouldn’t have wished

for him to drown in continuous sorrow over their deaths.

However, the illusion shattered on a fateful day when his father, pushed beyond the brink of sanity,

erupted in a fit of rage. He hurtled a bottle through the air, striking the wall next to Axel with a sickening

thud, shards of glass flew across his face and in that moment, the painful truth was laid bare.

Stunned and bloodied, Axel listened as his father unleashed a torrent of pain and rage revealed what

she actually happened that night. How his mom had headed out through the rain. How his worried

sister ran out with her mom and into the car searching for him. They died all because of him. The

revelation hit him like a sledgehammer, and he stood there eyes wide open, his forehead seeping

blood.

“How could you live normally? Live freely, play, and smile after what you’ve done, you monster!” His

enraged father bellowed. “You had the audacity to forget! After taking two lives!”

That haunting day marked the death of Axel’s laughter. He had killed his family, that was all he could.
