NIRVANA
“So that asshole Travis told his father about what we did in his house?” I asked Knight in disbelief.
“Probably, and how he just came for payback.”
Eyes filled with rage for revenge, McKaye growled out. “I should have just killed them all and made it look like an animal attack.”
I looked at McKaye. “Yeah. Now, I regret letting them live. It’s all my fault my best friend just got shot.”
“It’s just because you didn’t want blood in our hands, and we couldn’t have known they would retaliate. We thought we scared them enough to stop coming after us.”
“Look what happened yesterday, Luka.” I pointed my finger at Kailin sitting next to Dane.” She almost died because of me. This time, the blood in my hands is my best friend’s.” I turned to Knight when he hadn’t said a word. “Go on. Just say it. Where’s the I told you so speech?”
“This is not your fault, Luna,” West said. His words were supposed to make me a little better, but they made me guiltier. “They’ve been bullying us before you even came. I got beaten, and North got beaten by Travis’s minions because we chose not to fight back.”
“How do we handle this, Alpha?” Kaleb asked.
“With what’s going on right now, I don’t wanna suggest anything. I leave it for you all to decide. Every time I made my own decisions, someone was getting hurt. I guess I’m not good at it. I’m just way over my head, thinking that giving them a chance would change them for the better.” I shrugged when I felt like I wanted to cry. “I was wrong.”
“I say that’s bullshit, Vana. You are just a good person, way better than any of us, and that doesn’t mean your decisions are wrong. They are so bad to be given a second chance.”
I looked at Kailin. I realized I hadn’t apologized to her. “I’m so sorry. If I could only switch places with you, I already did.”
“Or maybe that bullet was intended for you, but you know, it bounced to Kailin.”
“No. I don’t think so. McKaye was there and made sure not to cross us again. Travis probably got out of the mental hospital and talked about what happened. Either way, it’s only a matter of time before he talked on national TV that a pack of wolves ravaged his house.”
“Nobody will believe him, Alpha. He’s a lunatic,” Maddox said.
“Don’t be so sure. With these deaths and virus, he might as well make his life’s goal to hunt us.”
“I’ll take care of this situation.”
All eyes were pinned on Dane, including Kailin. “What are you planning to do?”
“You better not know it. It keeps you sleep at night,” he said to her, making McKaye groan.
He still couldn’t accept the fact that Dane was his sister’s mate.
“Calm down,” I told him through our link.
“He’s a-”
“A what? A monster? A murderer? So do we. Now shut up and behave.”ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
He rolled his eyes at me, and Knight saw it, and he wasn’t impressed.
“What was that, Mac?”
“Luna told me to shut up and behave.” He shrugged.
“No, I want you to tell me your plan,” Kailin insisted.
“I will kill the man who shot you,” Dane said without a hint of emotion.
“And how do you suppose to plan on killing him?”
“I’m a resourceful man, Kailin, and I’m good at doing it on my own.”
“You’re not going there alone,” Knight stopped him.
“No offense, Alpha-”
“That’s exactly what you wanted to say, and I’ll be offended. I know you are her mate, and you want revenge, but they also came after my mate and me, and this issue has been going on for years. I just let it go, but this time, they call for blood, and I’m giving them what they want.”
“How do you propose what we should do?”
“We?” I asked Dane. “Just the two of you?”
“You just said it yourself. You don’t wanna make any decisions.”
“I’m not making any. How do you fight against fifteen men?”
Dane looked at Knight. “Can we talk alone?”
“No way,” Kailin and I said in unison.
Dane breathed through his nose, his jaw clenching.
“Let’s talk in the office. You and you, stay.”
I opened my mouth to say something when Knight raised his finger, warning me. I shut my mouth and shrunk into the couch.
He and Dane went to the office, and I knew I couldn’t hear it because Zarah put a spell around it so no one could listen to any conversation from the outside.
“What do you think are they gonna talk about?” West asked.
“The hell, I care. I don’t trust that guy.” McKaye crossed his arms over his chest, ignoring the glares from Kailin and me.
“Cool it, Mac. Maybe one day he’s going to save your ass. You can’t judge someone by his job, and he could have killed me, but he didn’t.”
“He wasn’t ordered to kill you.”
“Exactly, and you should learn to like Dane because you’ll see him more often around here. And try to be less of an asshole.”
“Unbelievable,” he muttered under his breath.
I rose to my feet when everyone looked at me. “I’m going to find out about their plans.”
I made my way towards the alpha’s office and knocked. A few seconds later, the door opened, and Knight glanced at me.
“Can I come in?” He hadn’t answered me, and I was already helping my way in. “So what’s the plan?”
“You can’t wait outside?”
“No.” I made myself comfortable sitting on the chair while Dane was on his phone.
He came behind me and planted a kiss on top of my head. “I was expecting you would insist on coming with me.”
“I respect you, alpha.” I reached out for his face and tilted my head to kiss him.
Knight pressed his lips against mine for a quick kiss. I was not much of a PDA person. In fact, I didn’t encourage myself.
When the call ended, Dane cleared his throat.
“What did they say?”
“They are reviewing your request and will do the surveillance if Cadogan committed some crimes. Look, this is a unique situation, considering he is a human, but we’ve known about your mate’s role in the fight against a strong being and the fact that she was there. There’s a huge chance they will take this job.”
“Hold on.” I raised my hand. “You hired them to do the job?”
“If they accept it, yes.”
“Why?” I stared at Knight.
“We know how to clean up the mess,” Dane replied.
I swallowed hard. “What kind of mess?”
“We can create a scenario that even authority can’t figure out that someone did it. We can make it look like an accident or a gas leak at home or in his work.”
“Okay, okay.” I gave up. “I don’t wanna hear it.” It seemed a good idea but a little unsettling. “You work for them?”
“I work with them.”
Knight’s phone suddenly rang. When he picked it up, I saw his confusion. “Why is Victor calling me?”
